Bottom line is if you're working up there and you fit the bill that he's talking about, it doesn't matter where you're from.

The road is not fine, how can you possibly say a road with that much traffic, and that kind of traffic is fine.
Only the last part was about Newfies. No, there is no shortage of idiots from everywhere but the Newfies are well represented.

The road is fine. The ACTUAL road itself is fine. If you drive for the conditions, stick to 100-115 km/h, pass safely and don't get hit by some idiot doing something stupid, you are fine. Just like any other road.

Yes, it should be twinned. It's not so suck it up and drive like you are on a two-lane highway with lots of traffic because that's what you're on. It's irrelevant what the road should be.

The problem up north is who is on the roads, what they're driving, and how reckless they drive. I know a guy who bragged about evading the police on 63 by weaving in and out of traffic until the cops dropped the pursuit. Sounds safe. You've got rig rockets being driven by guys with no care for themselves or the public it seems. Such a shame that 7 more people are dead because of careless driving.
You may be right, but it is right around there when people start thinking OK, we are now on the way to Fort Mac so lets start hauling Ass. Plus it goes from a 2 lane to a one lane right at the golf course turn off.
I just know I'm always on edge whenever I'm on that road.

The starred out word is, of course, Truckers.

More information released about the victims:

A 35 year-old-male, a male and female, both 34, 28-year-old female, an 11-year-old girl, 2-year-old boy so that leaves no information on the dead teenage girl. The injured are a 34 year old man in serious but stable condition and a three year old boy in good condition.

There's a video here:

http://news.sympatico.ctv.ca/home/pa...crash/170f8fcf

Before you click on the video, just look at that picture. Who in their right mind is passing there? It's on a frigging hill ffs! Reports are that it was also snowing heavily at the time.

Sad.

I haver never driven this road, but that sure looks like a very bad place to pass.

Given it will cost 1 billion to twin this road, I'd imagine it ain't happening for a few more years.

There is a whole lot more traffic on it than there used to be though and twinning it would certainly help, but the fact is it's not right now and you have to drive accordingly.

I constantly hear people from here bragging how quickly they can get to Edmonton. Someone says it's a four and a half hour drive and inevitably some idiot will pipe up with a "pfffff, I can do it in 3".

Young males with too much money, testosterone and bravado that feel invincible 'cause they make a hundred and fifty grand a year is the problem. That group of people - young males - are the highest risk on the roads, it's just a fact. Now put fifty thousand of them in a city with a whole bunch of money and one way out to go spend it. It just stands to reason that there is going to be a higher incidence of stupidity!

I have been passed numerous times up hills, around corners, in driving snow, etc. etc. etc. and it's usually some idiot in a super duty who thinks it just can't happen to him - a common misconception among that group or that he's just damned entitled to it 'cause he makes good money. The sense of entitlement that people up here have is a constant source of amazement to me! They sure think they really are a someone!

Without naming a certain group, you've got a whole bunch of twits up here who came from eff all, have no education, have never had a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of and all of a sudden they are literally showered in money. They're not smart - and by that I don't mean all of them! - but they weren't smart to start with and that's why they were never educated in the first place! The only difference is that now they have means. The money sure as hell doesn't make them smarter, just able to display their stupidity more openly.

Ahhh, now I've got started and could keep on ranting but I'll shut up!
You said it a little more eloquently than I did, but we're definately both on the same page here...

As a contractor doing business on the north side of Edmonton and the surrounding acreages, I do a lot of driving on single lane highways; some of the things I've seen over the years...?

I was almost killed by a "drifting semi", two years ago on Highway 37, while doing a job out in Ft. Saskatchewan. I took the ditch and the trucker managed to keep it on the road, but it was way too close for comfort.
Lots of "bull balls" on that particular highway too...

Also lots of slow moving agricultural traffic.

A very dangerous combination.

Maybe we need to twin 37 as well?

What a travesty...how dare those nasty politicians.

The intersection at Namao (with Hwy 28) is usually good for at least one multi fatality accident a year.

Sad situation with what transpired here, but looking at the scene? That's wholly on the idiot that decided to go ahead and attempt to pass.

That money was committed since 2006. 17 Kms are complete. Ironically this stretch where the accident happened is being twinned and will be done sooner rather than later.

In saying that we are paying a billion dollars because people couldn't be bothered to care about safety. If those idiots weren't on the road they wouldn't need to twin it. Many times I have driven that road and maybe saw 10 cars between edm and mcmurray.
It appears because someone decided to pass on a solid line going up a hill a 4 year old will grow up with no family.

37 is bad too. Especially with all the semis and other trucks and the sun in your eyes depending on which way you're going.

Are all of you ######bags who blamed it on Newfies happy now...

Three members of a family from Newfoundland have been killed in a fiery crash near Fort McMurray which took a total of seven lives.
Newfoundland-born pastor Shannon Wheaton, his wife and two year old son Benjamin were killed in the crash. Their 4-year-old son Timothy survived but has serious injuries. Wheaton, who served for three years in Grand Falls-Windsor but was from Frederickton in Gander Bay, was a family ministries pastor for the Fort McMurray-based Family Christian Centre.

A$$holes.....

Good grief, that looks like a gong show. One would think that those kinds of loads would have to be moved at night, or is the road busy 24/7?

That one on the right looks like its over the maximum width, or right at the limit.

We had a pilot truck driver killed this year on 881 because some drunk hit her when she tried to stop traffic to get a module across a bridge.

That picture, I don't even...

Is there any recent update as to how much of the highway has been twinned?

Has anyone brought up the possibility of the much discussed Alberta high speed rail going up there too? Should that project actually become a reality would running the train up there do anything to alleviate the traffic?

Financial boondoggle.

Twinning the highway would alleviate the traffic at a far lesser cost and far greater benefit to the public.

Not sure if it was my firewall settings but I couldn't get the video to run there. The CTV link is here with their video. You can see the section of road from 0:40 onwards. It's pretty clear you're nuts/insane if you want to try to pass along that stretch.
