Aside from all of the drama over the right way to banner that this announcement has stirred, I think there is some method towards massaging nieuwy into the gm position here. Maybe Burke has gotten the sense that joe's hesitancy to come to calgary was rooted in the way he left, and that the fanbase or city wouldn't welcome him. What better way to smooth that out than a forced honouring? What I take out of this is that if you don't want him as gm, buy tickets to that game and boo

And what about retroactively applying this FoF designation to the existing numbers that were actually retired?

That would be hilarious, continue a bad program to make a bad GM feel better before we hire him.

Is it just an installation in the concourse?
I still think its lame, and the Leafs are the lamest of the o6.

I hope not.
Please come back to Calgary Niewy, look how much we love you... This is exactly what I am getting at.
Barf.
How about 'your time in Calgary means nothing when evaluating your ability to develop the Flames into a contender. Because the Flames are awesome and you should want to work here.'
He should have to grovel for the job as much as anyone. I mean seriously, are the Flame s the low self esteem team? WTF did that happen?

The reason the Leafs started doing it IIRC was so that they wouldn't run out of numbers given their long history.
I don't think they actively sought to lower the quality of individuals who get their names raised, like the Flames are doing.

You cant judge past players on today's standards. Holding out was an acceptable form of negotiation back then. Like it or not, that was the way it was done.

Did they officially do that? I don't remember hearing that they unretired those 2 numbers.

Sure it was. No question.
But he, as far as I am concerned, gave up all the goodwill in going so.
He is not even in the same ballpark at Kipper IMO.
There should be a f*&^%g church at the dome for Kipper. That is a forever a Flame guy.
The best seats in the dome should be the Kipper section. There should be multimedia installations about him.
Screw guys that played here 25 years ago and left for greener pastures.

They didn't, but they're talking about him joining MacDonald and Vernon in the program, and they aren't part of the program, they had their numbers retired.

I think enough of this nonsense.
Retire the number or do nothing at all.
2, 9, 14, 12, and 34 should be the only numbers retired.

They should retire numbers and do a major wall display for the Forever A Flame players. The more of these they do, the more they're pinning themselves into this bad decision.

I believe in the Pony Power
|
Loob should have been done before Nieuwy. That guy is Forever a Flame - has followed the team since he left, calls into the post-game show on broadcasts - the guy still bleeds the Flaming C.
And he should also be in the HHOF - but that's another matter.
I too hate this whole concept - though I also don't think Nieuwy's number is worthy of retirement.

Nieuwendyk's very 1st comment on Flames GM job "Just don't feel at this time it's something I want to give 110% to which is what it requires

I hope "at this time" extends way past the draft. If we had to go through Sutter bottoming us out, then Feaster's tenure, to finally have a proper GM search only to end up with a bad one, that would be heartbreaking.

Fleury should have his number retired before Nieuwendyk has his honoured.
Absolute embarrassment for me as a Flames fan how the organization disregards Theo's contributions to the organization.
