Default Gorilla Shot Dead at Cincinnati Zoo After Child Climbs in Enclosure

RIP buddy.

The outdoor gorilla center has been operational at the zoo for 38 years, and Saturday was the first time a person had gained access inside, Maynard said.

Gorilla Shot Dead at Cincinnati Zoo After Child Climbs in Enclosure
by ELISHA FIELDSTADT

A 17-year-old gorilla was shot dead Saturday by a Cincinnati Zoo employee who feared the animal would harm a child who had climbed into its enclosure, according to officials.

The 4-year-old boy climbed under a railing and through wires and fell about 10 feet into the enclosure at about 4 p.m., said Cincinnati Zoo director Thayne Maynard.

First responders "witnessed a gorilla who was violently dragging and throwing the child," Cincinnati Fire Department Chief Marc Monahan wrote in a statement.

Once "the threat from the gorilla was neutralized by a Cincinnati Zoo employee with one shot from a long rifle," the child was retrieved and brought to Cincinnati Children's Hospital with serious injuries, the statement said. The child, who has not been identified, remained conscious during the entire incident, which lasted more than 10 minutes, the statement said.

That's really too bad, but obviously not much choice when a child is still alive and being dragged around by the gorilla. The outcry from "child dragged and killed by gorilla while staff choose not to shoot" would be one for the ages.

What beautiful animals. Just incredible. It's too bad they're so tribal and naturally aggressive and strong as **** because they seem like they'd be the coolest animals on earth to interact with.

Yeah what part of that video could be worth watching? It's a child being dragged and gorilla being shot.

The gorilla doesn't look to be harming him in that video but it doesn't show much.

A dart wouldn't take effect immediately and I am guessing it could enrage the gorilla.

The video actually doesn't show any dragging at all. About a 15 second part where the gorilla is standing over the child that's sitting the water and it grabs the child's hand for a second but let's go ... weird thing is it switches to a different camera that records nothing for the remaining minute.

Sure, but what does this have to do with that?

Initially the gorilla looks to be somewhat protective of the child.

If the gorilla wanted him dead or injured he'd be dead. The strength of a gorilla is insane. The gorilla likely was dragging the child the same way he'd drag his babies and didn't think anything of it.

The fact the kid is in hospital with only minor injuries just shows the gorilla didn't want to hurt the child but they did do what they thought was necessary so can't blame them. If only they could shoot his dumb ass mother instead.

The article should read humans take gorilla to forced captivity, don't secure site, allow Gorilla to babysit 4 year old then kill gorilla.
