Default Iran and Saudi Arabia restore relations

Good to see and plenty of motivation from all sides to get this done, but still an achievement to actually get this done.

Hopefully goods news for the proxy war in Yemen.

Very good news for Middle East stabilization as well. Also interesting that China brokered this, and to me is a political signal that they are trying to establish paternalistic credibility on the world stage by being the brokers of external region peace deals, like the US does all over the place.

China offering a better deal on weapons than the Americans I'm guessing.

I doubt China is doing out of the kindness of their hearts. What are they getting out of this deal?

Influence? Credibility in the Middle East?

Credibility in the ME and as well they want secure passage for oil and energy supplies for their economy. They want to de-risk the tensions, and frankly, I think so do both the Saudis and Iranians. It kind of benefits everyone.

I agree, but I do kind of love the Americans ending up with egg on their faces about the whole thing. They just lost a major chunk of influence in the region.

It's not like the Americans or any other foreign countries were working in the Middle East out of the goodness of their hearts.

Not to get to too melodramatic, but is the start of the changing of the guard? In my life, I can't remember a time when this sort of headline didn't have "United States" where "China" is today.

Maybe not, but it's interesting nonetheless.

It is in my opinion. The majority of the world (often called the Global South) does not view the US in a good light and have been waiting for an alternative for a while.

China is building an opposition to the Americans/West and it’s a little scary in my opinion. China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran…

Both regimes are deplorable and oppressive; none better than the other. When two of those shake hands for some reason - others beware of the reason. Nothing good will come out of it.

Peace and stability in that region where the majority of the civilian populations are normal, good people just like us is a good thing. Hopefully, this is the first step to establishing that.

China, I think, wants to grow and establish itself as a serious world-leading power with legitimacy and recognition in the eyes of the Global South on the basis of being a peaceful and commerce-oriented influence on the world. This is obviously good for that.

Iran also recently had a state visit to China to build that relationship, and Iran just announced that they've discovered they have the world's second largest discovered deposits of lithium. There's a good chance that they are going to join BRICS+ along with the Saudis. These would both be important relationships for China in terms of access to resources, and if they both join BRICS+ it will be a major blow to the petro-dollar and the dollar standard generally.

Considering the US has been taking very aggressive positions with China economically, China's going to keep making friends with whoever they need to as a matter of securing a pathway to continuing their own growth and development.

The USA was never going to broker any kind of deal involving Iran.

As for Saudia Arabia, it makes sense that they are broadening their ally group, as the USA is no longer as dependent on middle eastern oil. The USA is currently a net oil exporter. The oil they are importing is largely coming from us (Canada). US oil imports from SA are less than 1/4 of what they were at their peak.

It'll be interesting to see how this one plays out between Iran/SA. They cut ties 7 years ago. Even then, they were actively engaged in multiple proxy wars against each other. So resuming relations doesn't necessarily mean peace. it's obviously a massive win for the world if these two nations can stop their conflict.

That depends on whether or not they'll just immediately get involved in new conflicts elsewhere.

It kind of makes sense that it would take a brutal dictatorship to broker a peace deal between two other brutal dictatorships.
