Can't be more than 4 points out at American Thanksgiving if the team has any hopes. Currently they are sitting at 4 points back. Also currently 2 points behind LA (with the same amount of games played) so if the Oilers continue to fall, the Kings are the horse we are racing. *insert there is a chance meme*

Honestly, when I looked at the standing I thought it would a lot worse.

I think the 3rd spot in the division is wide open. Kings, Oilers, Flames. 1st and 2nd I believe go to Sharks and Ducks.

Member when the Canes made the playoffs with 83 points? Oh, I member.

It's possible that a team in our division makes the playoffs with 86-90 points. Two strong teams in the Sharks & Ducks, then a bunch of meh.

Nah. Things are bleak and they definitely need more wins than losses before the end of the month, but they are only five points out of a top three spot in the division yet are four games under .500. Pacific division parity has flattened this #### out. Many teams have started poorly and one of the teams that didn't, the Oil, have won two games in 8. There is absolutely still room for hope that the playoffs are attainable. But the turnaround needs to start immediately.

I think it silly to say the Flames need 96 points.

90 is probably more than enough to get in this year.

The whole point of the black line and snake is that if you get 96 points, you are almost guaranteed to make the playoffs. Some years it will be less, but if you get to at least 96 points, good things will happen. Sure 96 may look silly now, but it's easier to predict after you've had 20% of the season played. Your prediction if 90 may be true, so good on you for predicting that they'll need 0.07 fewer points per game.

Snake update coming after the game tonight. There will also be a bonus snake or two.

The red snake was started to rise again. As pointed out by Darren Haynes, the Flames are 2-0-0 since the Supermoon. The two game win streak puts the red snake 6.073 points below the black line, after being a season high 7.732 points below it after game 16. The red snake is now 2 points above the purple snake, and 7 points below the green snake. It would take 8 more wins in a row, making it 10 in a row overall, to get the red snake above the black line. That streak would still put it 3 points below the green snake. For the pessimists in the crowd, the purple snake was one point below the green snake after 35 games, despite 9 points below it after game 18, where we are now. The gap is smaller for the red snake.

I've started making some other snakes, with multiple years, for fun. I'm thinking of starting an OOT snake thread, but for now will just post a couple I think you'll enjoy.

The orange snake was above the black line for the first 16 games of the 2016-17 NHL season. After the loss in game 17, it is now below the black line for the first time all year. For those of you who were worried about the orange snake's progress, I've plotted the progress of Edmonton's best season in the past six full (82 games played) years. The orange snake is now one point below the blue snake. Last year's purple snake never went above the black line after losing the first four games.

This blue snake is currently 6.902 points below the black line. It is 11 points behind the dark green snake, which represents the last time Vancouver made the playoffs. They were eliminated from the playoffs by our hero, the red snake, in six games. The yellow snake represents last year's points. It was their worst season since the 1998-99 campaign, but it did allow them to draft Olli Juolevi ahead of Matthew Tkachuck to shore up their defensive needs. The blue snake is 6 points below that snake.

Default Flames 2016-17 Playoff Snake

I continue to love this snake (think I may have drunkenly coined the term way back when...) and all the variations thereof.

Still, I can't help but remember the most unforgettable lesson that history has taught us about snakes... (for Cali)

I didn't want to make a new thread and am not sure if anyone has mentioned this but with a win tonight, the Flames will win their first 7 game segment.

1st seven = 2 - 4 - 1
2nd seven = 3 - 4
Current seven = 3 - 3

Today is the appearance of the rare, post game snake. The Flames are 4-2-0 in their last six games. That's a 109 PPG pace. If they continue that the rest of the season, they will finish with 99 points and be easily above the black line. In those two losses, there were some bright spots. Calgary played the league leading Hawks very well, and if Johnson doesn't flub that puck near the end, they end up with at least one point, and a chance at two. The first period against Buffalo was great. The rest was horrawful.

The Flames get a day off tomorrow and then play another three games in four nights on the road. Boston, Philadelphia, and NY Islanders are up next. I'm hoping for at least four points in those three games, with the best opportunities coming on the last two games, which are on back to back nights.

The red snake is 6.756 points below the black line. It's 2 points above the purple snake and 9 points below the green snake. It would take 9 more straight wins to get above the black line. If this happens, it would simultaneously be above the green snake for the first time.

The purple snake is about to win 8 in a row so the red snake better step up.

Only 3 teams in the Western Conference are at or above a 96 point pace right now. I'm sure some teams will pick it up, but it looks like the target will be lower this year.

It may take less than 96 to make the playoffs. That's almost irrelevant here. The point of the black line is that if you end the season with 96 points, you will make the playoffs, no matter what anyone else does. The snakes allow you to just focus on your own team, and not worry about what the OOT scoreboard looks like. If you don't get to 96 points, you'll need help from other teams, but still could make the playoffs. 96 points is not the projected finish of the 8th seed.

Yeah, I get that, just interesting how things are working out between the West and East. Every team in the East is pretty much at 500 at least.

I want to see the orange snake again.
