COTW is selling ball caps for $10. My son bought one, and all the cool kids at Shaw Millenium Park got them too.

But I still dont get the fanfare for COTW's chicken. If it was supposed to be the alternative to KFC, good. It's good to have something different. But when it's compared to Popeye's chicken, it tastes rather bland and has less of a crunch. Unfortunately, i dont think COTW's chicken is a slight notch worse in comparison to C&C's chicken either

You feel shameful skipping tip in those situations vs. a COTW place. Inclusion is fair IMO.

This was the point of my story. The taste scale wasn't that much higher to justify the price differential. I had COTW a week after I posted this and stand by my take. I even caught COTW on a day when legs were $1 each and thighs were $2.50 each.
|
Was it manditory to tip?
They could have neon signs pointing at the tip jar with a choir in the back, singing about the sins of not tipping but ultimately, you made the consensual choice to tip.
It's almost like blaming aggressive salesmen for using sales tactics in selling you their optional upsale products. At the end of the day, you still had every right to say no
Also, is it really fair to can you really compare apples and oranges? Corn fritters are much easier, cheaper and less labor intensive to produce than buttermilk biscuits
Anyways regarding the taste scale vs price scale. Yes there will be times when you will be paying 50% more for a just marginal bump in taste. If you compare A&W vs 5 guys, a $10 teen burger combo that includes a teen burger, med fries and med drink is a better value than a 5 guys comparable with their cheeseburger, med fries and a medium drink (about $16). You're also making an unfair comparison using a set combo with an a la carte selection. See how it sounds more pricey when comparing A&W's menu with 5 guys?
If you ever think something that costs twice as much should taste better double good, I dont recommend ever getting into fine dining. The cost of the best tasting menu in Calgary will pale in comparison with a tasting menu at a michelin star restaurant. In certain courses, it will feel like you're getting a marginal taste improvement. If you're paying for the best, prepare to pay much much more

Going to The Himalayan for the first time tonight. Anyone have any recommendations? I always gravitate to lamb when it's available but I'm open.

I always recommend getting the Dal Bhat (then pick lamb as your meat if that's your jam). Very authentic and a great meal.

get the fish tareko as an appetizer. We get this every time and it's amazing.
If you don't feel like an appetizer, go for the himilayan grill with fish. You can get it in mild, med, and hot. Hot is actually pretty spicy, and I like my spice, so order accordingly.
Another favorite of ours is the chau chau (stir fried noodles).
This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Calgary. Delicious, generous portions, and affordable.

I gave CnC a try yesterday. I think it was decent. The chicken was cooked well, but the breading is a bit heavier than I would like, and weirdly while the chicken was fine, the coating almost seemed over cooked, if that's possible? Maybe something in the batter or the oil? It formed almost more of a crust than a coating. I didn't really like that.
The biscuits were not as rich as Popeye's, though Popeye's are probably 75% lard.

Bar Von Der Fels is fun!
Hidden away, with some great wines by the glass. Great way to try some unique stuff, by the glass. Full range... that $80 bottle you don't want to buy, just try a glass.
Also, the Chefs here are amazing! Try the beef tartare, some of their cured meets, gnocchi, potato dish with trout roe.

Checked out Jinya Ramen bar on 4st SW and about 19th. This is a US chain based out of LA... but it's spread across the US.
Really good for a fast food kind of Ramen experience. Efficient service, above average flavour and taste.
Had the Tonkotsu Ramen.. very nice. Medium spicy wasn't that spicy.
Service is very efficient. It seems always fairly busy but the turnover is quick based on the service style. I would return here and I saw they did some takeout.
