I sure wouldn't.

Dustin Wolf is 19-years-old, and with 3 professional games on his resume. The Flames will not go in to the season with him sitting on the bench as Markstrom's backup, and the only way he gets into NHL games would be on a NHL LTIR recall. But in the event that one of Markstrom or his backup goalie is injured for an extended period of time next year, they will almost certainly make a move for a temporary stop-gap rather than to throw their 20-year-old top prospect into a handful of NHL games.

Wolf is at least two years away from the NHL.

Cooking him in the AHL is a traditional view, but he might be the best option available. I think he will surprise to the upside. Outside of an injury he is the best goalie prospect we have had since Mr. Vernon.

It's not, really. It is the long accepted view still adhered to by virtually all NHL organisations.

That is doubtful, considering that JS Giguere and Craig Anderson were at one time Calgary Flames prospects. Will Wolf be a better player than Laurent Broissoit?

But beyond all this, there is just no way the Flames start next season with Wolf on the bench. For one thing, he will still be an AHL rookie, and only 20-years-old. For another, the Flames will be much more eager for him to be starting games regularly in Stockton, rather than sitting for multiple consecutive nights on the Flames bench.

I am excited about Wolf's potential, but let's also not forget just how small this guy is. He is still a massive long-shot to make the NHL, and I think this as much as anything will prompt the Flames to be very patient with him.

I think the best projection for Wolf in 2021-22 is for him to solidify his spot as the starting goalie in Stockton. Add one more year of hopefully dominant performances, and a few NHL callups, and then I think he will make his first appearance as a regular on the Flames roster in 2023-24. He will be 22-years-old.

He grew to 6'0, not huge but not tiny either, four goalies in the top 10 for stats are 6'0 or under and a few more are only 6'1. with the event of smaller equipment goalies need to be quick and athletic. Wolf is just that.

Hopefully, we are seeing the reversal of a trend.

I see that 26-year-old Calvin Petersen (6'1") and 25-year-old Alex Nedeljkovic (6'0") are both among the top-five in SP for goalies with a minimum of 10 starts.

Almost every elite goalie in the league was already a starter, or at least a 1B, by the age of 22.
Vasilevsky, Hart, Hellebuyck, Gibson, Lehner, Rask, Price, Fleury, Quick, and Bobrovsky were all regulars by 22.

Even guys like Rinne, Halak, and Elliott, all 8th round picks or later, were in the NHL by 22.
Goalies don't take as long to develop as people think. At least the good ones don't. Our very own Markstrom played in the NHL at 20. Out of the top 15 highest paid goalies in the NHL, only Martin Jones and Frederik Andersen did not play by the age of 22 (they were 23).

If Wolf spends time in the AHL, he shouldn't spend more than 1 or 2 seasons there IMO.

Vasilevsky was 22. Fleury was 21. Hellebuyck was 23. Rask was 22. Gibson was 22. Price was 21. Bobrovsky was 22. Lehner was 25 (Is he an elite goalie?). Hart was 21 (is he an elite goalie?)

Vasilevskiy played parts of two AHL seasons. Hellebuyck played two seasons. Rask played two seasons. Gibson played two seasons. Bobrovsky played three seasons in the KHL. Lehner played three AHL seasons.

Varlomov was 23. Grubbaur was 26 or 27. Holtby was 24. Quick was 22. Andersen was 25.

Markstrom did not become a starter until he was 27. He also played five seasons in the AHL.

After two full seasons in the AHL Wolf will be 22-years-old. It will take as long as it takes, but I sure don't think we should be pencilling him in as an NHL starter by then. I don't see the same clear pattern that you seem to.

We must disagree on what the definition of a 1B is. We're also counting the ages differently. I'm going by first games of the season.

Varlamov* Grubauer*
And they both played in the NHL during their 20 year old seasons.

I didn't say Anderssen was a starter by 23. I said he was in the NHL by then.
Same foes for Markstrom.

The evidence is extremely overwhelming. I don't see how anyone can disagree with this.

Also, nearly every cup-winning goalie is under the age of 30.
I haven't checked, but I think Tim Thomas was the only 30+ goalie who won the cup since 2008. Murray, not Fleury, played in the recent Penguin cups. Crawford might have been 30 in 2015.
