The NHL has known about the link between concussions and CTE for a decade at the very least, and possibly longer. They can either do good PR (which is impossible since its the NHL), and offer the players a substantial amount of money, or fight it in court, prolong the issue, and ultimately end up having to pay billions like the NFL.

PS...there are emails that clearly show the NHL has been unscrupulous in regards to the concussion issue. Especially Bettman. I wish I had a link to it.
Not that I disagree with the rest of your post, but didn't Lindros sit out that season because of a contract dispute?

I suspect it is the micro details that in play here. Things like even 'non-violent' hits to the upper body which occur on a regular basis lead to brain damage ... or how the design of helmets has an impact on how the brain is impacted .... in other words, information which suggests the risk of brain injury is intrinsic to how the game is played ... that sort of information is what the NHL is fighting to keep secret. Is it really that hard to believe that NHL owners don't realize they profit from secrecy? Don't disclose anything if you aren't forced to do so. Every successful business knows that.
