All contracts are paid in USD regardless of whether or not they play in Canada, yes?

It's time to recognize that goaltending options for Calgary are limited, and the best option is to come up with a home grown solution.

That is all w aellnd good and I would agree, but the Flames still need to find someone to provide good goaltending in the meantime. Any "home grown solution" is at least a year away, and probably more likely three.

I'm surprised so many people have Gillies or Parsons listed as elite NHL goalies that will be able to fill in the void in the next 2-3 years...and want a goalie as a stop-gap measure.
The reality is that it's likely that Gillies and Parsons never become NHL calibre goalies, let alone elite NHL goalies. That's the nature of the position.
It's foolish to think that you have anything at all until it materializes. What are you going to do if you look for a stop-gap solution for the next 2-3 years and then Gillies and Parsons both bust??? Then what??....You've wasted 2-3 years of Gaudreau, Monahan, Brodie, Giordano, Backlund, Hamilton......you've wasted 2-3 years of their life.....because without elite goaltending, this team or any team for that matter isn't going anywhere.
So the whether you acquire a blue chip goalie prospect like Grubauer or sign a UFA like Bishop to 6 years (not gonna happen now anyway), or trade for MAF...the fact is that this position needs to be resolved.
Enough with the Hiilers, Ramos, Elliotts...and please NO to Miller, Mason ...on and on and on bandaid fixes.......just fix it and deal with the aftermath when/if Parsons or Gillies become legit goalies.

Completely agree. So the Flames should be looking at short term help while Gillies and Parsons get the experience they need. That means signing someone for two to three years, tops. Anything more than and they probably set themselves up for a problem, especially if that guy comes with a big contract and term.

I think people are getting confused about the term stopgap. It doesn't mean a band aid solution until a prospect turns out, it just means getting someone for two to three years, whether they're solid or elite. At which point you could get another goalie if a homegrown option isn't ready/available.
So you wouldn't necessarily be wasting three years of our core, just getting someone who we aren't committed to for six or seven years.
For example Fleury could end up being a stop gap because of his contract, yet you wouldn't consider him a band aid that wastes years of our rebuild.

It would be unfortunate if Kipper was still under contract when Leland Irving and Matt Keetley are ready to be NHL superstars.

Well that just screams Grubauer/Korpisalo/Forsberg/Pickard type goaltenders then.
It was the Mcphee regime that drafted Grubauer back in the day.
Watch the VGK pull off an unexpected trade for Matt Murray followed quickly by a Flames nation melt down lol

Francis article.

“I’ve heard I’ve tried to get him three or four times, which isn’t correct,” said Treliving, who admittedly got permission to talk contract with Bishop before last year’s draft before opting for a Brian Elliott swap.
“We’re looking at goaltending, so it’s natural we’d be poking around. Did we look at it as an option? Yes. But the assumption we can make is that for the American guy who played minor league hockey in Texas coming to Calgary was probably not choice No. 1. And if he was, it was probably for a long time for a lot of dough.”
|
According to Francis, the Flames did kick tires about acquiring his rights, but the Kings weren't letting teams talk to Bishop before acquiring rights, so they didn't want to risk giving up an asset without knowing how Bishop felt about coming to Calgary.
