I agree. I like that he battled personal demons and managed 70 or so NHL games as a late bloomer, but for the most part I consider him unproven.
Plus, he has a hipster beard!

Wow, that is a huge contract for an unproven goalie.
As Scorpion noted, the Canes have a solid D and a defensive coach. That creates a great environment for Darling, but man this is a risky contract.

They're probably hoping Vegas takes Lack and they'll just run with Darling and Ward next year.

He's going to be 29 this year, I know goalies are typically late bloomers but this is even a little beyond that. One would think he'd have carved out a starting role somewhere by now if he had it. Could be wrong here, but I don't think the Flames missed out on this one.

Fleury or Bishop would look good in Winnipeg. Jets have lots of cap space to get Bishop and assets to acquire Fleury.

Fleury is a possibility but that's assuming he would waive his NTC go there which is doubtful. Bishop not a chance. Jets aren't big spenders and Bishop would likely rather play in 28 other places as lets not forget the Jets are probably the first team on most free agents lists of teams they won't go to.

Every goalie decision made has the risk of losing the guy the Flames really want, but at least it also closes the holes that exist for goaltenders making the remaining teams with extra stoppers nervous.
If the Flames didn't like Darling than this is a good thing.

Jets management is too cheap to do that.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign Elliott actually.

The low Canadian dollar and the lack of any success in Winnipeg for six years now could quickly become a problem for the Jets. They are already hamstrung by their budget, and depend more heavily on gate revenue than any other NHL team as they play in the League's smallest venue by a sizeable margin. Winnipeg ranked 25th in attendance last year while simultaneously were 1.9% over capacity.
