Default Fox News Airs Carjacker Suicide

Warning may be graphic
Mod edit- removed as it is also pretty graphic.

I want to know what others think about this. Was it OK for Fox news to show this? or as the news anchor tried, should have they not shown it?

Personally I'm not bothered by it. I have seen way worse things in movies and video games that I have become desensitized. But I could understand if you were watching it with kids or if you just don't like things like that.

I just put myself in the place of the people he left behind. How would you feel if someone you loved was shown killing themselves on television? That is the part that bothers me the most, not the actual suicide.

They're saying it was due to "human error" (it was on a five second delay), so they likely didn't mean for it to air. I'm not going to blame them for it.

That being said, in a world where humans committing suicide is aired live on television, and in a world where it isn't, I'd probably choose the world where it isn't.

The more ####ed up thing to me is the "car chase culture" that Texas and LA news stations seem to have. People are secretly hoping for this type of thing to happen every time they flip to the car chases.

edit: I guess that was AZ, still applies though.

I don't really personally care one way or another, as the OP said, I've seen much more graphic stuff and it doesn't bother me.

However, I don't really see how Fox could have avoided it. Yes, they were on a 5 second delay, but I'm not sure that would have been enough to register what happened, react, and pull the clip from the air in time.

I think you under estimate FOX News.

No, that is messed up. Wow, seeing that deeply saddens me and my thoughts go out to the person in the vehicle (witness to two traumatic events), the family of both victim and accused, and to the people who witnessed it on TV. Horrible to see someone so lost that they see the gun as their only way out.

I believe FOX says it was a mistake. I've been behind the camera before (briefly, and hated it) and it's understandable although amateurish and the one in charge of the delay should have a forced vacation. That's about as much fault as I would put on the program.

I've watched Budd Dwyer off himself, I've seen worse.

Wonder why Fox News felt the need to stay with the feed for three minutes, it must have been a real slow news day......

Dwyer was the big as-shat,A liar,a cheat and a real prick to do what he did for his wife.kids and family to see.(they were watching it live)

For those who have no idea who this guy was, Dwyer was a senater convicted of taking bribes in some sort of tax scam, he maintained his innocence but yet called a news conference just to kill himself in some sort of sic "I'll show you" statement.

Video Warning: Extremely graphic

Really sad. Basically by killing himself right before sentencing where he would be stripped of his office, he ensured his family would still get his pension (which would have been revoked upon sentencing).

The guy whose evidence most of the charges against Dwyer were based on admitted in 2010 he lied to get a better deal for himself.

If a 5 second delay isn't enough to register what happened and then cut off the feed what exactly is the point of a 5 second delay then?

Which is my point exactly. They probably figured that they'd have enough time to react if the police started shooting at him, or he started shooting at them...but I doubt that they expected him to shoot himself.

They will probably go to a 10 or 15 second delay from here, I'd imagine.

That Budd Dwyer video really disturbed me. I wish I had not clicked on that.
