They can dump gas as well, we pretty much let them dump wherever they want as long as no other airplanes are around; almost all the fuel evaporates before it gets to the ground. For the most part, anybody with a flight control problem can generally go directly to whatever airport they wish.
BA is pulling the 787 Dreamliner off the LHR-YYC for good effective February 10th.
Crappy news, and further proof that BA is struggling on this route.
Just the plane or the route altogether?
Surprising...it was almost full except for maybe a few business class pods (at $3200 per segment), on both legs of my return flight in late September.
There were some nice touches with the inflight entertainment/games/tracking screen, though its the first time I've flown BA and to Europe, and maybe that tech goes across the trans-Atlantic fleet.
The electronically adjustable shades were a novelty after turning them on and off a couple times. Not too sensitive about airline "air" which is supposedly better on the Dreamliner, and even less so when its an overnight flight and people are sleeping a few hours. Didn't notice an appreciable difference in cabin noise from the engines, which is also supposed to be less.
And yeah, it didn't have some of the circa 80's style signage or marginal attempts to make old things "look" more current, but I also didn't ever feel I was flying in some futuristic aircraft/atmosphere that would make returning to flying 737's and the like, feel as I was back in the stone age.
I also selected rows (in economy) with extended leg room both times; if I was in the standard seats, I'm not sure I would've had much to say at all about a huge difference; I certainly was expecting more of an experience given the newness of it the body.
That said, unless they really need that plane somewhere else, launching it starting in September and then pulling it in Feb isn't quite giving the route a chance when I assume most LHR/Euro travellers aren't going to either city in late fall and winter months.
I guess you'd have to assume they base Dreamliner's economic value to a route on how occupied the high margin seats are occupied (Club World), but again, a September launch and a December decision to pull seems a bit premature, as its not quite the peak travel season to accurately gauge that.
I just flew out of Roswell, NM yesterday and the boneyard there was fascinating. I grabbed a couple photos of what I could see that I'll try post later, but unfortunately most of it I saw while taxiing.
I flew on a Westjet 737 800 that just had their new seats put in. The flight attendant said this was the first run with the new seats and only the second plane to get them. I was surprised to see that they had power plugs in them. It seemed as though the plugs where a bunch of international types but didn't see usb. Now your asking why I couldn't identify usb...
The housing that holds the plugs faces downwards and to get a good look at them you would have to lay on the lap of the person next to you and look up at theirs to get a look at recepticales. The seats are nice though. Much more leg room.

UAL28 from LHR to EWR (Newark) had an issue forcing them to burn off/dump fuel and return to LHR today, love this photoshop from the flightradar24 track:
