Default Laptop recommendations

So now that there's this big fancy shmancy tech talk forum, I decided to utilize it in an attmept to absorb all of the nerdiness of the place and form a nerdbot! Muah-ha-ha-ha!!!! But to do this, I need a laptop...I've got 3000 bones to drop on one. What should I get? I was looking at a Dell, and I can get an XPS 1530, all decked out to the nines for just under that price. Or are Mac's really that good? And would they have the performance that I could get out of a Dell? Or should I not be looking at any of those and getting a Toshiba or something?

What are you planning to do with your laptop? Primarily internet and email? Gaming? Graphics and photoshop work?

If you got that kind of cash get a mac. Don't waste your time with Vista, it sucks. There are no viruses for macs because they are too hard for hackers to make.

I'm just heading off to college/university next year, so probably a little of everything. I don't play a heckuva lot of big games on the computer, although it might be nice to play online or something...And I hardly ever use photoshop or stuff like that.

And I was talking with our CTS teacher about this...are there no viruses for Mac's because it's so hard to hack or is it because they've only recently become popular. Why would hackers make a virus that would've only affected a small portion of the computers worldwide?

I disagree. Mac's are just as vunerable to viruses as PCs. That commerical with the fat guy and the kid saying 'oooh lookie lookie I'm a Mac, I don't get virsus' was a very arrogant and stupid move. The next day I had 10 Macs come over my bench with a brand new evolution of a worm virus.

But I do agree that Vista blows.

I think you should get an LG. Their 15" platform has a number pad!

Also, Intel got off of the socket-t technology and into something new for their cpu's and motherboards, so theoretically when a Core2Duo is too slow, you can lift the chip off and just dump a QuadCore onto the same motherboard. As long as the front-side-buss can take it, your gold to stay in the same chassis for even over a decade.

Well if you want to play games then you should probably go with a PC. Game selection on Macs is very limited and unless you want to buy a program that allows you to run windows (which you'll also have to buy) to play games. It's probably just easier to run windows on a pc in the first place.

All the negativity for Vista is completely over blown IMO. I use it on two computers, a desktop and a laptop, and it's fine. No problems. Chances are you won't have any problems with it for everyday normal computer use. I've never had any limitations or problems with it on my crappy laptop or my high end gaming desktop. The only downside is that it does take a good amount of hardware to run it, so cheap computers may suffer. But with your budget that won't be a problem.

The macs are very nice laptops, I'm still seriously getting one (actually trying to decide between the 15" mac and the XPS 1530).

For true gaming though neither would be appropriate, the video chips in them are good but not for really high end gaming.
