And that team later traded that player for McCann + picks. McCann was demoted to the AHL this year, and the Panthers are still seen as having robbed the Canucks blind.

Having Gudbranson signed also gives them some flexibility in who they can expose to Vegas, right?

Yeah and then that team missed the freaking playoffs with 22 less points, so maybe it wasn't such a great move in hindsight. (Along with other terrible moves)

Look, the guy says emphatically that he's not a top 4 unless it's a lotto team. I just pointed out that a season before he was top 4 on a division winner.

He's not a top 4 on a 2nd last place team...Florida's problems had nothing to do with Gudbranson being in the lineup or not.

Not unexpected for a 3rd overall pick to be placed in a spot not earned.

And he was a fringe Top 4-5 in Florida

Really? I don't watch the Canucks much but Wideman is likely out of the league now.

This is pretty much it. When he played anywhere above the #5 spot, he would get exposed for lack of footspeed and poor decision making. He has tools, but no toolbox. Also, he's the prototypical defenseman for a bygone era. Big and physical, but can't skate well enough for the modern NHL.

Just so we're clear, he only played top 4 minutes once Willie Mitchell got hurt. He was a bottom pairing guy for 75-80% of that season. The top four were:

Ekblad-Campbell
Mitchell-Kulikov

In the playoffs, Tavares torched Gudbranson regularly, and ultimately led to the series downfall for the Panthers.

Only thing he has going for him is his age, so theoretically he could get better. Realistically, he's a slower, less skilled Deryk Engelland

LOL jesus anyways. I'm not saying the guy is a superstar or anything.

I saw someone say he wasn't a top 4 Dman unless it was a lottery team.

The year before he played the FOURTH MOST MINUTES of any Dman on the Florida Panthers who weren't a lottery team.

Whatever the reasons were for him playing the 4th most minutes doesn't matter. The FACT is he played the 4th most minutes and they weren't a goddamn lottery team.

It's a fact.

Friggin moving the goalposts and #### just to argue is so annoying. Haha

Just because he played top 4 minutes on a division winner does't means he played well

Or, more importantly, plays well now.

Even Stanley Cup teams have some poor players in a cap world.

I team wanting to contend would look for someone better in their top 4.

Engelland played on our top line for weeks 2 years ago, and Calgary made the 2nd round. Doesn't make him a top line player. Same with Gudbranson in Florida.

Playing the 4th most minutes and being a top 4 d-man are apples and oranges.

If it wasn't for injuries, he wouldn't have had the 4th most minutes.

You moved the goalposts.

But in any event, you are basically correct that sometimes awful players play roles they shouldn't be. My statement should have been "any sensible team looking to contend will want a better d-man taking top 4 minutes".

He is better than he played last season, but he certainly isn't a top 2.

You know what's also possible, Cobra? Maybe Gudbranson was better back with the Panthers than with the Nucks and better back then than he is now.

I moved no goalposts. I said he was top 4 on a division winner which is a fact despite you saying the opposite.

You and others then moved the goalposts by making excuses for WHY he played top 4 minutes instead of saying "oh yeah i guess you are right he did play top 4 minutes on a non lottery team"

Does it really matter how much he played if he doesn't change the fact that he didn't play very well?

I am just glad that there are enough people on here who watched gudbrandson in Florida, two years ago who are able to give an in depth perspective on his ability and potential as an NHL defenseman.

From what I saw last year he was a big and plodding defender who played a simple game but who had a lack of footspeed. I wouldn't pretend to say that I watched enough Florida Panthers games to know 95% of their roster.

Though the could be a decent 2nd pairing guy coming over but he wasn't, some of that might have been playing with Hutton who struggled badly the first few months, but more likely Hutton's struggles stopped conveniently around gudbransons injury

He can be a 5th guy who is good on the pk, preferably playing even strength with a puck moving type player

Most likely though he's a deadline move for a late 1st, and I don't say that based on anything more than just look at what 3rd pairing d men who can pk have gotten at the deadline the last few years

All I said was that playing the 4th most minutes doesn't mean he was a top 4 d-man.

Injuries etc. might make him the 4th most minutes, even if he didn't play top 4 minutes.

But he has played poorly for a few years now.
