For just starting I'd go with Rook, Sledge, Jager and Twitch. These characters all have skills that aren't essential but can still help the team quite a bit while you learn to play.
Tip of the day for new players: For the love of God, don't barricade between two objectives when you're the defending team. You're just blocking off access for your team to be able to defend. You want to be mobile
Castle players, I'm mostly looking at you

For someone starting out I'd suggest Twitch, Sledge and Thatcher. For defenders you could go with Castle, Smoke and Rook. Just remember, if a Castle throws up a barricade and locks you in (or out) of a room you can tear it down and it will go back into his inventory.
Once you get the hang of the game and understand the map layouts you definitely want to pick up Thermite and Mute.

I have thermite, thatcher IQ and twitch as attackers and mute, castle, rook, and kapkan as defenders.
Played a couple rounds online for the first time. I am not good.

A lot of guys aren't - so just have fun.
The best thing to do while learning is just not rush off on your own and die - guys otherwise will appreciate the effort of someone trying to work as a team.

Yeah the nice thing about Siege as that when you are green, you can follow your team (or stay at the objective) and give yourselves a way bigger chance of winning.
Once you know the maps well and want to have split ingress or to lurk somewhere, you can make it off on your own.
Classes like Pulse are top level lurkers, so don't bother until the maps are like 80% in your head.

Still playing the crap out of this game (once I got a driver bug fixed which kept crashing me out).
Preview of the Black Ice (Canadian Ops) pack (which has been delayed til Feb )

I am also still kicking around. Had some great matches on the weekend.
In other news, here are a few screenshots of the two Canadian operators coming out in a couple weeks:
Buck's kit looks like something right up my alley. I am interested to see how Frost's bear trap thing will work.

I love defensive ops, Frost looks fun. Wonder how visible the trap will be.

Ouch...Might have to look into season pass.
They are unlocked if you have it, correct?

Is it just a preview? I've seen places that say both, and the official wording from Ubi is kind of vague. It reads to me like you get them 1 week before launch permanently, which would make more sense considering the cost of the season pass, and what you actually get from it. Unlocked ops is really the only thing that makes the SP worthwhile.

I'm curious too - I'm hoping that you don't have to hide it in barbwire.
