I've never played a game in this series before, nor have I played any kind of "sports management" game. I just grabbed it off of Steam. Any tips or tricks for a complete noob?

Gents, I'm having a problem.
I've got the game, and downloaded the updated file above, extracted where they say to, but I only get random gibberish names.
What am I missing?
EDIT: And it's not with randomized names. I don't have the ability to choose the 7.3 database...

Strange. I downloaded the roster file and it worked perfectly. Did you start a new game with it, or were you using an existing save game? I was only a few minutes into the game when I downloaded the file so I started from scratch.

I'm not getting any sleep tonight at this rate. This brings me right back to EHM 07. Great game so far, very addicting.

I'm finding the font hard on the eyes.
I've tried a few but what Ive found is that if you do replace the fonts, you have to name them the same as the old ones...

I bought the game today to support the development, but I tend to avoid playing anything in early access because bugs drive me nuts. How good/bad is the early access on this one?

So far it is running without many bugs for me. I think the reason is that it's essentially a more polished EHM 2007, so they're aren't that many brand-new things in the game. Rather, they seem to have fixed a lot of the bugs in the old Version. For example, the trade AI seems much better now and if offer someone max salary they actually get mac salary (instead of 50k or something that they got in EHM 2007 when you offered max)

Usually, in these type of games, I recommend people to start out with a good team so that they actually get to experience winning and don't have to suffer too much in the beginning. Good teams are fairly easy to get to run well and good practice to get a hang of things.
Second, you should try and ignore/forget what you know about players from the real world. Look at their attributes in-game and make your decisions based on that. We all have favourite players in real life that we think are greatly underappreciated and we want to use them in the game, but chances are that they're going to suck attribute-wise.
And one last thing: under the action-button on a player screen you have the option to "compare" any players that you have recently viewed. You Will want to use that a lot to get an overview of a comparison of two players.

I'm using this font, and love it. It's nice and clean.

If you want to try it, find the font folder, copy your existing ones into a new folder, then paste this one in, but rename all of them as the same as the ones in there, wont work otherwise...
EDIT: Haha Avs just put Iginla on waivers, no one claimed him and how he's toiling for Fort Erie...

I forgot how much more in-depth this game was over the original.
Almost an overwhelming amount of information to try and take in while drunk at 3am.

I've also removed the on-ice logos, and put real ones in their place - for a touch of realism. Of course, they are not in the right place, unless you are over in Europe of course, but...
You can see the folders where they are. Since I don't play the games, just simulate them, I only changes the zoomed ones... Of course, these logos will show for all teams, not just 'yours'. I'm still working on cleaning up the edges, but since the logos are only 100 x 100, its tough. At least with MS Paint.
The highlight screen, and when you watch the games has a nice Wayne Gretzky Hockey circa 1990 feel to it.
Yes, I am a geek.

Best. Day. Ever. SI knows how to make sports management games and have a dedicated group of developers.
Make sure to report any bugs here:

Are any of the same developers involved now that were involved back in 2006? They were pretty good and open about incorporating the ideas of the fans and players back then when they were developing. They seemed like really good guys.

If there are changes made to fox bugs...etc, do you have to start a new franchise to enact the changes?

I think the standard recommendation is 'yes' but you usually can continue without any detriment. I think the change list will usually indicate which bugs (if any) require starting a new game.

Man I wasted hours and hours a day back in the day on this game. Anybody ever play in online leagues that had their own forums and 30 GMs. Good times.
