Default Coyotes buy Springfield Falcons AHL team to move to Tuscon Arizona

Looks like a new Pacific division rival for Stockton

Eric Stephens @icemancometh
Westward shift continuing for @TheAHL as Coyotes have an agreement to buy Springfield Falcons franchise, intent to move to Tucson, Ariz.

So now it's just the Canucks without a Pacific division AHL affiliate.

I assume the new Tuscon team will adopt the 68 game schedule?

With more teams moving to the west maybe they increase the number of games they play by a couple.

Canucks can't be long for Utica eh? That rink in Abbotsford is just sitting there waiting for them.

NHL equalization payments and having contracts like Pronger's which help them reach the payroll floor without having to pay any actual money.

Found an article from 2010 that estimated AHL teams to be worth $2.5 to $4.5 million. A relatively small percentage of most NHL team's operating budget.

Speculation is that the Canucks are trying to use the empty rink in Abbotsford to leverage a sweetheart lease similar to what the Flames got.

Also being speculated Utah Grizzlies are being targeted for the AHL, but that might be more of a Las Vegas expansion team AHL target.

I like it. They are living up to their changed named as the Arizona Coyotes.

Is the arena in Tucson near the center of town? It would be interesting to see how much Arizonans attend games when the games are conveniently located.

Sounds like they would play at the Tuscon Convention Center which is also where the U of A hockey teams plays. Google maps shows it as being pretty central in the city, basically DT.

Good news. Arizona has the best prospect group in the league IMO and it will only benefit our guys going up against them 8+ times a year.

Better than playing Edmonton's scrubs a dozen times.

I do believe that Portland will be relocating to Springfield as well. At least that is what I recall reading somewhere.

Why does Springfield keep getting a team? Terrible city, terrible fan support. This will be the third time they've gotten a team back after moving.

I have no idea, others speculate that part of the reason is Springfield is home to the AHL offices

They were one of the founding members of the AHL and were infamously owned and run by the late Eddie Shore.

The new Springfield team will be affiliated with the Florida Panthers as per the AHL's and Florida Panthers' facebook pages. So the Portland to Springfield move is official.

Last I heard, the move to Abby was being put on hold because Aquilini wanted to purchase the arena and its land from the City in addition to the municipally-owned Ledgeview Golf Course (a MASSIVE money maker for the City).

The City said get stuffed, but apparently were open to selling him the arena and its land (if I recall correctly), but Aquilini won't do it without Ledgeview. So it's all or nothing for Aquilini and the City won't give up the golf course. We'll see how it plays out.

Personally, I'd love to see a team back in the empty building. I'd be at every single game when the Heat are in town.
