So Goffie witnesses the lottery that gives him 3 of the top 5 picks?

When was the last time #1 going in actually got #1? I have no skin in the game but never been a fan of the spreadsheet draft lottery system. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there are better ways.

Just doesn’t seem overly realistic IMO.

Congrats to Ravi for winning the lotto.

There, can of worms open, don’t shoot the messenger just an observation and opinion.

Congrats to the Flames and Habs. Also lets shoot the messenger. Who uses those these days anyway?

It’s just math
The spreadsheet replicates the odds from a few years ago prior to the more complicated rules the nhl now uses
What are these better ways?

Two picks within the top 20. Neat, I guess.

If it’s OK with you I would like to address my question first.

I am curious to know the last time someone as the #1 seed actually got 1st overall. Any stats on that? I think that will show that the math doesn’t add up. Maybe we start there and if I’m wrong we continue with status quo.

But if I’m not, there are some smart GMs in this league..maybe we actually take some time to figure it out.

It is all just probabilities. Just because the top percentage team doesn't win it doesn't mean its wrong. You can flip a coin 10 times and get heads 10 times.

To answer your question: 2021 when NJ won. I believe they were last overall.
I can't find the 2020 standings but CBJ won (LA owned the pick) and in the lotto thread there is no mention of them moving up.

I don't know what your issue is. You say "take some time to figure it out". We did. We created an excel sheet that replicates the lotto odds.

And every year there is a much higher probability that a team that wasn't last wins the lottery. The field always a much higher chance than the last placed team.

So what do you think is not right that we need to solve for?

I lost. I feel like this is a pretty big issue.

Looks like this was the deal, which was made after the Kings won the lottery

Team: Montreal Canadiens

- Forsberg, Filip (C) NHL
- Heiskanen, Miro (D) NHL

Team: Los Angeles Kings

- Backes, David (C) NHL

Terms: #1 overall selection in the 2020 entry draft is sent to Montreal.

Pretty frickin' good deal for LA.

To clarify in looking back in 2020 we were still using the NHL draft for our draft, matching each NHL team to their CPHL equivalent. This was prior to the NHL making changes that now no longer makes that possible.

Goffie took Alexis Lafreniere at #1 and Grant took Byfield at # 2 it looks like.

Maybe that explains why I've been unconsciously holding Heiskanen in an untradeable death grip.
