Health care is a huge sector of employment and most require proof of several vaccinations, even the less effective ones like annual flu. And that's both public and private sector

Complications
Painful testicular inflammation develops in 15–40 percent of men who have completed puberty and contract the mumps virus.[8] This testicular inflammation is generally one-sided (both testicles are swollen in 15–30 percent of mumps orchitis cases) and typically occurs about 10 days after the parotid gland inflamed.[8] Testicular swelling has been documented as late as six weeks after parotid gland swelling.[8]

There is no available cure for mumps and treatment is supportive.[8] Symptoms may be relieved by the application of intermittent ice or heat to the affected neck/testicular area

I got it as a teenager. Lorenzo was ok, but Ricardo swelled up to the size of a hardball.

There was some speculation that the current Mumps outbreak began with a Wheat Kings player. I saw an article earlier but can't find it again to cite. Keep up on your vaccinations people!

Apparently in rare cases mumps can lead to sterilization and encephalitis. This could really effect player movement at the deadline if any other teams catch it.

VANCOUVER – Vancouver Canucks have terminated their agreement with their team doctor, Jenny McCarthy, after 5 players contracted the mumps.
The actress, model, and alternative medicine adviser for the NHL team was informed of her dismissal earlier today. McCarthy had advised the team to avoid vaccination and only consult outside medical advice if you agreed with it.

I'd be really hesitant to bring in a player from the Canucks locker room if its someone that you need in the lineup right away.
[QUOTE I've been told that I need to stay away from people while I'm sick with mumps. What does that mean and why does it matter?
A: When you have mumps, you should avoid prolonged, close contact with other people until at least five days after your salivary glands begin to swell because you are contagious during this time. The time it takes for symptoms to appear after a person is exposed to the virus can range from 12 to 25 days. You should not go to work or school. You should stay home when you are sick with mumps and limit contact with the people you live with; for example, sleep in a separate room by yourself if you can. Staying home while sick with mumps is an important way to avoid spreading the virus to other people. People who are infected with mumps don’t get sick right away—it can take 2 to 4 weeks for them to show signs of infection.

Well, in fairness, most of the time they arent 'sucking' on them they're just squirting them into their mouths.
As my old Rugby coach used to say: "just spray it in yer mooth, it aint yer momma's teet!"
He was not a very PC individual.
Although he did advise us against using crack (pronounced 'crick') prior to games, so he did have that going for him.

This particular tidbit really stood out to me:
Quote:
“We became concerned after Dr. McCarthy insisted putting Gwyneth Paltrow’s muscle toning cream on Alexander Edler fractured fibula as treatment,” explained Canucks Coach Willie Desjardins. “And the only prescription she gave out was for her book, ‘Louder than Words.’”
