To Philadelphia:

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Marcus Kruger
San Jose's 2018 2nd

To New York:

Josh Manson
Drake Caggiula
Philadelphia's 2018 3rd

...okay. Time for some rationale.

Washington trade: holy hell I love this deal. Ryan Spooner is one hell of a hockey player who helps to establish my top-nine going forward. Mike Weber is extra depth, who cares. Boychuk would be really, really expensive going forward, and I can replace him.

Calgary trade: Ryan Callahan sucks, you all were right! Thankfully, Cheese sucks as well, and was willing to take him! Kevan Miller will be a really great #4-5 defenseman for my team going forward, I love it. I also gave up a 4th-rounder in this one, but who cares, I have a ton of those.

San Jose trade: Nash is expensive and Conor Sheary will take his spot next year. Hutchinson sucks. I was kicking myself for giving up Raanta for him, and now I have Chad Johnson who will get an awesome re-rate next year. Also, Thomas Hickey! He's so good for the real Islanders. Now my first pairing will actually be the Isles' first pairing, Hamonic - Hickey. I love it, and Byfuglien will slide in really nicely on the second pair. And since MJK was being nice, he threw in Kyle Wood as well for reasons I cannot discern.

Philadelphia trade: Nugent-Hopkins is having a really mediocre year in the NHL, and I got Josh Manson for him. Alone, that would be great. But then I got Drake Caggiula and a 3rd for Marcus Kruger and a 2nd, a swap which I feel to be quite fair. Thanks for JonDuke for awesome negotiations.

These moves were all aimed towards the future. I can afford all of these guys. Remember Hanni's spreadsheet? Here's how it goes now (and don't forget that Patrick Sharp is available, guys):

(for the purposes of this, I stuck Larsen, Weber, Caggiula, and Kampfer in the A)

Compared to:

Here's my roster next season:

Ryan Spooner - Tyler Johnson - Tobias Rieder
Carl Hagelin - David Krejci - Patrick Sharp
Josh Bailey - Conor Sheary - Jonathan Marchessault
Leo Komarov - Derek Ryan - Radim Vrbata
Bryan Rust

Travis Hamonic - Thomas Hickey
Dustin Byfuglien - Kevan Miller
Josh Manson - Jon Merrill
Chad Ruhwedel - Deryk Engelland
Steve Kampfer/Philip Larsen

Tuukka Rask
Chad Johnson

Goddamn. I love this depth. It's a shame that my team is so mediocre this year, we can't win right now. Maybe that will change. (Note: I did not trade my first this year. Yes, I traded next year's first for Rieder and Kruger, and I flipped Kruger with RNH and a 2nd for Josh Manson, Drake Caggiula, and a 3rd.)

What do you guys think?

*Plus $3.00M in cap coming to us next year.

Manson played a total of 142 minutes for us and was very expendable, especially after aquiring Bogo.

Not sure where Nuge will slot in yet, but he'll help as an extra body for the playoffs, at the very least. We like that he can slot in as LW or C and cover for an injury if that happens. He's on pace to beat last years point totals, so I'm confident he'll have a slight increase in re-rate and allow us to move Nielsen in the off season, if not sooner.

We probably woudn't have been able to re-sign Caggiula, and Perlini is a cheaper option for us for next year anyway.
Upgrading a 3rd to a 2nd is always a treat.
Kruger was needed to make the deal happen and is meh...

The deal was sealed though because of the $3M in cap coming to us next year.
I'm not loving the addition of another Oiler to the CPHL roster, but am pretty happy with this trade. Thanks Scorp!

Ewww.. 3 M of cap next year. That completely swings this deal into highway robbery. IMO there is never any reason to send cap for the next season. Especially in a deal that involves depth pieces.

Scorp. You basically downgraded on all 3 pieces of the deal + added 3 M for the next year.

Please feel free to run deals by me or other GMs

I disagree.

IMO, Nugent-Hopkins isn't great. Manson is a definite upgrade.

I can afford losing 3 million next season. That's easy to make up.

The rich get richer in the philly deal. Lopsided deal as is and then 3 mill cap as the cherry on top. Isles love the activity but gotta be careful here or may be in a very tough spot in three months.

Isles activity is great, but that RNH deal is one of the worst ones I have seen in a long time. That 3mill on top of the trade turns it from horrible to outrageously bad.

3mill next year is not as easy to make up as you think. Like I said I love your activity and you have brought some life into the league with all the trades, but you need to find a balance of trading for the sake of trading and making smart deals.

yeah that's an ugly deal for the Isles. The 3m in cheese for next season makes it highway robbery for the Flyers, I really don't get the reasoning behind this. Mansons cheap contract is up and needs a bit of a bump, and with the 3m from this deal, Manson is going to cost you a lot more than RNH would have. Also downgraded the pick and bet on Caggiula being better than Kruger, which I wouldn't necessarily agree with (small sample size and everything).

Love the activity in general. But that one ... ugly.

Put the leash back on!

Just kidding. I've had a few stinkers of my own. I still get robbed on occasion damnit. Keep up the activity but I'd suggest getting some opinions from fellow GMs. There are some pretty objective GMs around here that will give you their honest evaluation before you pull the trigger on a deal.

I encourage everyone to go look at Josh Manson's play this year, as the Ducks' #2 defenseman, playing 18:00 a night, with some of the top possession metrics in the NHL, and then tell me how he is not an upgrade on <.50 PPG Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Nuge sucks.

Manson >> Nuge
Kruger > Caggiula
2nd > 3rd

Don't worry, I have a plan to make up the $3 mill.

What's the justification for including the 3m. Feels like that wasn't necessary at all. We can't have teams financially hamstrung.

I like it better, I feel Manson has more value to me going forward.

And yeah Manson is behind Bieksa in ice-time, but it's like Hamilton being behind Wideman.

I strongly disagree with all of you that this deal is poor. I could have taken others, yes, but again, here's my rationale:

Nuge: Sucks. Is actually the Oilers' worst centreman. Has some of the worst metrics on the team and is one of their worst +/- players.
Kruger: Anchor, for me. Useless this year, only serves to clog up a roster spot.

Manson: Stuck behind a ton of good defensemen in Anaheim. Will grow even further when he or someone else is traded away for expansion. Is already elite himself, in terms of his numbers.
Caggiula: Good prospect.

Should I have maybe taken Lindholm? That'll play out, we'll see.

To make up for the likely salary difference of RNH and Manson next season.
