Really actually sad about the Alan Rickman snub. I was surprised at Amy Adam's not getting nominated as well.

I really don't like the expanded Best Picture category.
You can always look at the 'Best Director' category, and that's typically the five movies that would've been nominated in the old way.

Sorry but Viggo Mortensen deserves a nomination for that movie. How many of you have seen it? He was "fantastic", truly.

Viggo was amazing, Viggo is amazing. Few actors can pull you into the story like he can. More than deserving nod for Captain Fantastic, hope he wins.
Honestly though haven't seen any of the other nominees and looking through Best Picture noms only saw Arrival. Will try to track the rest down before Oscar night but this is the least focused I've been for the big nominations in sometime.

Other than "The Sound of Music", which I was kind of forced to watch as a kid as some sort of Aryan tradition, I can't stand musicals.
Is La La Land really that good?
The whole year of movies was rather underwhelming to me. I liked "Arrival" and "Hell Or High Water" but didn't think, while watching them, that they would be up for Best Picture.
"Fences", just from the trailer/commercials just looks like two hours of Denzel being angry at his kid. Probably an unfair assessment, but they did sell it that way.

I thought it was charming, but I wasn't really blown away by it like some people were. Now that I've seen it, I probably won't watch it again. Maybe I'm dead inside. The movies that really blew me away were Moonlight & Manchester by the Sea. I loved them both.

Not the greatest year for movies that's for sure. La La Land doesn't seem like a movie that would appeal to me but I thought the same about Birdman and I was pleasantly surprised.

I barely thought La La Land was a musical. There's only like 5 musical numbers in the whole movie and none of them are that long.
I actually find it odd that we don't differentiate between movies with musical numbers (La La Land, Disney Movies, South Park movie) and full blown musicals in which there isn't a single word of spoken dialogue as everything is done in song.
It is probably getting a bit overhyped as it isn't exactly a monumental filmmaking achievement or anything, it's just a really solid good movie.
As for the Oscars, I find it a bit irritating that the most common stories are clickbait crap about the "top 5 snubs" and the like. How about we talk about the movies nominated and why they are there? But I guess fake controversy sells a lot better.

Amy Adams really just isn't a great actor. She's fine, but not great.

This is Streep's 20th nomination since 1979.

Streep is a great actress don't get me wrong, but I feel she garners nominations now for her name value alone. I would have chosen Amy Adams, although I haven't seen FFJ I thought Adams was great in everything this year (well except Batman/Superman).
I have seen the majority of the best picture nominations, and as some stated it's not the best crop of nominees. I still have yet to see La La Land. I want to, it\s just difficult to convince anyone to come see a musical with me. Here is my top ten movies of the year if anyone cares.
1. Nocturnal Animals (ecstatic Shannon was nominated)
2. Green Room
3. The Nice Guys
4. Hacksaw Ridge
5. 10 Cloverfield Lane
6. Deadpool
7. Captain America: A Civil War
8. Star Wars Rogue One
9. Hell or High Water
10. Sing Street
Honorable mentions: The Arrival, Star Trek Beyond, Zootopia, Dr. Strange, Lion (particularly the first half), The Witch, Don't Breathe.
The lesson for 2016 is to try and not get trapped in someone's else's dwelling. Split would also make my top ten if it were a 2016 release.

Also. Zero nominations anywhere for "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" is a damn shame.
