Flames 5 players cut from camp - Burke, Hyman, Phillips, Schneider, Kravchenko

https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/flam...ve/c-282126300

Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today that they have assigned Brayden Burke (Lethbridge/WHL), Aaron Hyman (Calgary/WHL), Matthew Phillips (Victoria/WHL) and Nick Schneider (Medicine Hat/WHL) to their respective junior teams.

The Flames also announced that they have released Dennis Kravchenko from Calgary's training camp and he has accepted an invitation to the Stockton Heat's training camp. The Flames have 60 players remaining at camp (6x goalies, 19x defensemen, 35x forwards).
Kravchenko going to Stockton's camp. Burke not offered a contract I guess.

How can they assign Burke or Hyman? Did we sign them somewhere?

I think they just mean they were released.

I was hoping they'd offer Burke a contract but I like the Lethbridge Hurricanes so that's pretty much the only reason why.

Hyman and Burke were amateur try-out players that the team took a look at for the sake of prospect camp. It's a bit surprising that Burke wasn't signed, but you could also argue that maybe the team felt his skillset was a bit too close to Phillips, Mangiapane or Gaudreau's, and how many smaller skilled forwards do you need? (Answer: if they're good, you could use many...)

Phillips was Calgary's sixth rounder in this past year's draft, and he rejoins a really good Royals club. Schneider returns to a Medicine Hat club where he's the undisputed top goalie. Kravchenko gets a potential spot in Stockton if he shows well.

Wouldn't Brayden Burke still need to be drafted?

There is a loophole that allows teams to sign players that are still eligible for next year's draft if they attend training camp.

Obviously there are some details as to which players are eligible (i.e. the Oilers and Vlad Tkachev), but Burke would have been eligible to be signed by the Flames.

The Flames exercised this right last year with Nick Schneider. And one of the more famous instances of this happening is with the Kings and Martin Jones.

But now that the Flames have released Burke it looks like that window may have been closed.

The signing window for Schneider closed on Thursday, as the WHL season began on Friday.

I would imagine a whole lot of players will be cut in the next couple of days after the split squad games tonight. The team doesn't need 60 players to be around anymore

Schneider is already signed.

The signing window for undrafted CHL players is either the start of the CHL league's season or, if the player is at an NHL training camp on a tryout, he can be signed by that team up until the start of the NHL season.

When Jones signed with LA, he was signed on October 2, which was well after the Hitmen's season had started.

Kristen Odland @Kristen_Odland

Gulutzan said the #Flames want to get down to two teams for Thursday's practice. Cuts are coming.
