If Edmonton is going to put him on waivers and give him away, surely they would be willing to trade him wouldn't they?
Honestly, I think a Yakupov for Wideman trade could be really beneficial for both sides, especially if we retained salary. We're weak on the right side and Edmonton desperately needs to upgrade their defence; Adam Larsson just isn't it.
We can only retain half of Wideman's $5.25M ($2.625), which means it would be a small ($125k) salary dump on our part.
The hardest part would be convincing Wideman to waive his NMC. However, since this is a contract year for him, he's going to want all the minutes he can get. Would he play #1 pairing minutes in Edmonton?

But its the same result, bad/lazy defensive play, me first hockey, blindingly stupid play.
Even with T-Mac last year, the main reason for the improvement in gaa was a better goalie, but that team was still blindingly bad in its own end, and he certainly didn't get a better work ethic out of that team.
Yak hasn't failed because of coaching, he failed because he couldn't live up to being drafted where he was and he was in a normal year a late first rounder early second rounder.
|
I think you can blame the coaching carousel. Stability alone in learning a system is worth something. You can't have all of the players on a team under develop and perform better elsewhere if there isn't something grossly wrong with the coaching and development.
And based on San Jose players comments about how bad McClellan was and there consistent under performance relative to their talent I think it is safe to say they still have a bad coach.

It's honestly pretty close. He needs another 66 points in the next two seasons to beat Patrik Stefan's point totals. Although Yakupov hasn't fallen on an empty-net breakaway, so it's kind of a toss up.

I wonder if a team like NJ would be interested in Wideman. They don't have much for D depth.
Work a side deal with them to acquire Yak, and then flip him to us for Wideman.
I just can't see Edmonton giving us any sort of discount

Did they bring back the doughnuts for the media once they sent Dallas packing?

Would it be a discount? I think it could work out well for both sides.
Of course, it's also possible Edmonton doesn't do a deal that's in their best interest just to spite us. I kind of feel the same way, but an added RW is too good to pass up.

Personally I think a Bouma for Yak trade makes all kinds of sense for both clubs and would make it work dollar wise. Might have to add a prospect like spooner or Morrison to make it happen but I would be down. Just would feel really bad for spooner/Morrison

I wonder if Calgary would benefit from picking up Yakupov given some holes they have on wing. He has a shot and some speed. he doesn't seem lazy - just ill-tutored. And maybe not too bright. Can a poor hockey IQ benefit from being with a high IQ like Gaudreau or does he drag the high IQ down.
|
Gaudreau seemed to play just fine with Eichel and McDavid. Wouldn't worry too much about low IQ's dragging JG down.

@SportsCentre
JUST IN: Edmonton Oilers name Connor McDavid as their new captain, their youngest to wear the 'C' in team history. #TSNHockey
@EdmontonOilers
The #Oilers have named @cmcdavid97 the 15th captain in franchise history. @27MilanLucic @ebs_14 & @RNH_93 will serve as alternates.
I am fully confident they only named him captain in order to claim the piece of history.

Play 45 career NHL games, get promoted to captain. Way to earn that Connor!

So silly. Why not let the kid have a few years, let a good veteran be captain. It was good enough for Gretzky, Mario, Yzerman and Crosby.

Crosby was about 30 days older than McDavid when he got the C.

He'd played more though - two full seasons. But yeah, he's not as good an example.

Calgary should make Tkatchuk captain for a day to get the record and troll the oil.
