Maybe he only goes 6 years but McDavid is wired to win and if he takes too much of the pie there is no way the Oilers can put together a competitive team when he makes $12-$14M per. $9.7M would also be the highest cap hit any player signed out of a ELC.
It depends upon how you look at it. In terms of the number, then yes. But relative to the value of other contracts at the time they were signed, then no. Crosby's RFA deal is worth around $12 m in today's market. Factor in the current rules regarding back-diving deals, and the last big RFA offer-sheet to Shea Weber, and I don't think there is a chance McDavid comes in under $11.5 m.

Isn't it better for the NHLPA to keep pushing salaries (prices) up?
doesn't the PA strongly oppose any kind of sweetheart deals or discounts? The more they push the envelope on salary standards, i would imagine the better from a union perspective.
Mcdavid is clearly looking to be the best player of the upcoming generation. His contract will set the bar as far as what the upper bar on salaries.
I don't see mcdavid screwing the oilers, he will sign, take it long term till UFA years or perhaps 2-3 more. But that is going to cost 10-12 mill per year i think.
#Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli announces Darnell Nurse underwent surgery to repair ankle ligament & bone damage. He will miss up to 12 weeks.
Well with Nurse and Davidson now out for extended periods, excuses are fully ready as soon as the Oilers are out of the playoffs and doing their annual April lottery party.
Oiler hate aside, that sort of thing sounds possibly career derailing.
Terrible for the young man. Years ago my son had a similar injury, but in basketball, and it took over 18 months to regain full mobility/flexibility. I hope he returns to strength quicker than that but with the Oilers past history on injuries I wouldn't bet cash on it.
