Here's a question. If Dan Ellis had thrown his stick at the puck to knock it away from the net, would Brodeur have been awarded a penalty shot on Ellis? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.
A penalty shot is awarded when someone throws their stick. But the team that is awarded the penalty shot gets to pick any player they want to take the shot that was on the ice at thet time of the infraction. So the Devils would get to pick one of their 5 skaters to take the penalty shot
An interesting thing is that if the ref was going to award the Canes a penalty shot on the delayed penalty and then Ellis throws his stick, what would happen to the Devils penalty shot if the Canes scored on theirs? I would assume the Canes get to shoot first because the Devils infraction occured first. I know if the Canes dont score then the Devils will take their shot but what would happen if the Canes scored? There can't be two goals scored on one stoppage of play so I think the Devils would just get a power play (unsportsmanlike conduct to Ellis) then. Which wouldn't be too bad since they'd be on a two man advantage.
If that happened, it would be fun to hear in on the refs discussion

Although in the case of throwing an object, the penalty shot is actually awarded to the player who the infraction is against.
53.6 Penalty Shot - When any member of the defending team, including the Coach or any non-playing person, throws or shoots any part of a stick or any other object or piece of equipment at the puck or puck carrier in his defending zone, the Referee or Linesman shall allow the play to be completed and if a goal is not scored, a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team. This shot shall be taken by the player designated by the Referee as the player fouled.
Later on in that same description:
53.7 Awarded Goal - If, when the opposing goalkeeper has been removed, a member of the defending team, including theCoach or any non-playing person, throws or shoots any part of a stick or any other object or piece of equipment at the puck or puck carrier in the neutral or his own defending zone, thereby preventing the puck carrier from having a clear shot on an “open net”, a goal shall be awarded to the attacking side.
For the purpose of this rule, an “open net” is defined as one from which a goalkeeper has been removed for an additional attacking player. The goalkeeper is considered off the ice once the replacement player has entered the playing surface.

you are correct if the goalie is in the net.It is an awarded goal if the net is empty. 100 percent.
Worst 'leadership' guys ever. And despite leading the team in points, I actually think Tanguay is more detrimental to the team being on it than helpful. Probably the most invisible scoring leader I've ever seen.
