looks like Spains national coach Julien Lopetegui will become Real Madrids new manager.

Just

I mean who is he and what has he done? I honestly had to google him to find out he nearly became Wolves manager once.

first and foremost I'm surprised he's agreed to give up his cushy NT job for the suicide mission of being Zidanes successor. I know the Real job is one of the biggest and most tempting in the world, but timing-wise this doesn't seem very smart.

Yeah....I was sort of wondering that myself.

He either thinks this Spanish team might crash and burn and be hedging his bets or he got offered too much money to turn it down.

It does really seem like a bad move. That current seat at Real Madrid is a Poison Pill.

As long as it's a fully guaranteed contract, why not? Worst case is he gets a massive payday for a few months work. Better question might be is he the best candidate Madrid could find who had any interest in the job.

It could affect his future opportunities.

I mean considering two years ago he might have been Wolves manager, it's been a meteoric rise. Unless he goes full Moyes, he'll get another gig somewhere else. I doubt he catches much flak for Papa Flo being Papa Flo.

See....this is the thing for me. He went from being basically nobody (sorry Wolves) to the Manager of Spain now to Real Madrid.

Doesnt that seem odd to you?

exactly, that's why I'm surprised he's agreed to it. This isn't a Moyes scenario - the Spain job is awesome, probably top 3 in Europe (beside Germany and France). Even for a big payday - why leave that for a fragile job that could very well tarnish his reputation?

It seems like he's very well thought of. Is that odd? Maybe a little that it's come so fast, but we've seen a lot of coaches have rapid rises. Maybe he craps the bed at Madrid, but maybe he turns into a world beater. I think the point I made is the more curious one: Was there no one else more experienced who wanted this job?

I was thinking the same thing, it does seem like a 'sacrificial lamb' policy and hes going to be the scapegoat for their rebuild.

Zidane likely saw the writing on the wall.

Wouldn't that be fun? Him roaming the sidelines with that Catalonian Independence lapel.

In other Madrid news, Atletico have announced that they have reached an agreement with Monaco over the transfer of Thomas Lemar. French media say the fee will only be around €60m (plus huge sell-on clause), which is considerably less than Arsenal and Liverpool were apparently willing to pay last year.

Hmm, I wonder if they’ll have funds from a sale to help pay that.

🤔

who? Football's second biggest attention whore? We'll see. It's a long summer, there's plenty of time left for him to schedule press conferences.

So uhhh Spain fired Lopetegui today, they have no coach for the World Cup as of now. Diego Costa as player-manager?

It's so obvious he's just drawing this out to July 1 when the release clause drops in half. He should just announce he's going to Barca and not be such a high school girl, but alas...
