Oilers and Flames concerned about Alberta Standard Time
http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...917/story.html
Quote:
The Oilers and Flames, after a lot of recent years out of the playoffs, look to be about to begin an era with plenty of Stanley Cup playoff games again. Guess who they’ll be playing in the first round or two just about ever year?
Teams in the Pacific time zone! That’s 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. starts in Calgary and Edmonton. Even the regulation time games won’t end until midnight.
|
Quote:
With the HNIC Saturday games and the Pacific time zone games, as many as 30 games in each market could be starting after nine and ending after midnight in Alberta.
There would be many other moving parts involved with moving away from daylight saving when it comes to hockey alone.
If Mountain Standard Time was only one hour from Eastern Daylight Time, Calgary and Edmonton could be scheduled with 6 p.m. games in the Saddledome and Rogers Place to be part of 7 p.m. Eastern prime time.
|
Just another one of the inconveniences that would arise if we abolish daylight savings time. Thomas Dang should find another way to cut his teeth in the legislature.

There's nothing wrong with DST, leave it alone. The only way getting rid of it works is if everyone does it

Of course Terry Jones can't even write an article about daylight savings without mentioning McDavid...
I am a supporter of just leaving the clock an hour ahead. Obviously it makes no sense for Alberta to do this on their own however so there would need to be a North American or internationally agreement first.

When the hell did Flames ever start a game later than 8:30pm? (Playoffs included) Why is he making it up that games would start at 9 or 9:30?

If Alberta does not fall back 1hr this coming fall, then PST would be 2 hrs behind for 6 months of the year, thus, all those games that used to start at 8pm and 830pm MST would become 9 and 930. Wouldn't be the playoffs though- would be all the PST away games from beginning of season till March.

He's talking about 7:00pm games against Pacific teams being 9:00pm on Alberta TVs.
I dunno, I feel like the NHL can manage? Like, they make intradivisional games work somehow.

Ah, I get it now. I thought it was assuming that Pacific time would keep pace with Mountain time in always being one hour behind.

MST is best time zone for hockey fans imo- all of the start times can more or less be managed for viewing- for those working standard hours anyway.

As a Calgarian living in Queensland, Australia...a place without Daylight Savings Time (and the time zone is 2hrs wrong)...do not take having DST for granted and stand up to those that want to remove it.

Changing the time is ridiculous. It causes heart attacks, traffic accidents, and grumpy children.
This is the only thing the NDP have done that I think is a good idea, but it's a great idea.
As for the idea that everyone else should do it first, I would suggest that when something is the right thing to do, then waiting around for everyone else doesn't make sense. Especially when the same argument about not doing it will apply everywhere.

So, we should keep using daylight time aware of all the health and psychological issues cuz it will interfere a little with hockey times?

The sun rises at 4:30am and sets around 7:30 pm for the summer. It'd be much better if we used daylight savings and had the sun out til 8:30pm. Fellow Alberta living in Qld.

An early sunrise wouldn't really be an issue in this case because I believe the proposal is to move to CST which would effectively be like keeping MDT all year round. Though it would mean 9:30 am sunrises in December (closer to 10:00 am up in Edmonton). Over 3 months out of the year would have sunrises later than the current latest one (about 8:40am) that occurs on the winter solstice. On the plus side the sun wouldn't set until at least 5:30pm all year

I lived in Brisbane for 6 years so definitely feel your pain. It was so annoying having the sun rise at 4am and set at 6pm. Not to mention the stupidly of Brisbane being the farthest east capital yet being an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne and a half hour behind Adelaide.
The problem is the state is so large and the north doesn't need DST. They really need to split the state into 2 or 3 time zones but the government seems to think that would be impossible.

This really seems like a 'yeah, lets totally get rid of daylight savings time, I hate it.'
Then, when the sun doesnt come up til after 9 am for a couple of months 'this sucks, why did we change? I like the old way better.'

Just keeping doing daylights savings where we rewind by an hour. Everyone loves that one. Replace the one in March with that one too. Only rewind time so we can keep sleeping in longer.
Problem = solved. I can't believe no one has thought of this.

Just need to attach the giant rockets to earth's equator and we're good to go. But if we have those we should probably just slow down the rotation a bit and have 25 hour days.

So if BC will be 2 hours behind us, I can watch the first two periods, catch a flight to Vancouver, bet on the game and be there in time to catch the anthems?

If you think about it, interfering with hockey times multiple times during the winter should actually cause worse health issues than a once-a-year change to the clocks.
This study suggests that there's a slight increase (8%) in the rate of patients suffering a stroke in the two days immediately following the time shift, compared to two weeks before and after the shift: https://www.aan.com/PressRoom/Home/PressRelease/1440
There is no increase after the first two days.
This slight increase is believed to be caused by the disruption of the person's circadian rhythms and the lost hour of sleep people experience in the two days following the time shift until their bodies adjust.
Now, think about later hockey games. A game that starts at 8:00pm will typically be over shortly after 10:30pm (unless it goes to OT). A game that starts at 9:00pm will be over shortly after 11:30pm. A game that starts at 9:30pm (most Kings and Sharks weeknight home games start at 7:30pm PT), won't be over until sometime after midnight.
Now, instead of having to adjust your sleep cycle twice a year for a couple of days (which can be prepared for ahead of time to help reduce the negative impact), you could lose an hour of sleep every time you want to watch a game played in California or Vancouver (or Vegas, starting next year) for most of the hockey season.
It doesn't just have to be hockey games either. It can be any tv show.
Let's say you have a person who doesn't own a PVR and doesn't subscribe to any time-shifting channels, so they watch their favourite shows whenever they happen to air in Spokane. This person's favourite show airs Wednesday nights at 10:00pm in Spokane. Right now, that person watches the show at 11:00pm in Calgary. After it's over at midnight, they go to bed and get 6 hours of sleep and go to work the next day.
If we stop changing our clocks, from November to March, this person's favourite show will air starting at midnight and won't end until 1:00am. Now, the person only gets 5 hours of sleep because they still have to go to work at the same time.
This wouldn't be happening once a year for a couple of days in early March, it would be happening every Wednesday night for four months of the year.
Sports and TV schedules are pretty superficial, but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of people plan their lives around those schedules.
Even beyond things like entertainment, many businesses in Alberta operate on schedules that are dictated by people in other time zones. If the argument in favour of not going onto DST is that it will make it so that people don't have to adjust to the time change, it simply won't be true for a large number of Albertans who would still have to alter their schedules to align with the schedules of people they do business with in other time zones. So instead of shifting their clocks by an hour twice a year, they'd have to shift their entire schedules. It would have the same end result, but be a lot more confusing.
