Flames Flames sign Juuso Valimaki to 3 year ELC ($925k + $425k performance bonuses)

https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/flam...?tid=282300716

Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed their 2017 first round draft pick Juuso Valimaki to a three-year entry-level contract.

Valimaki, a native of Nokia, Finland, spent the last two seasons on the blueline for the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League. Last season he netted 19 goals to go along with 42 assists for 61 points and 34 penalty minutes in 60 regular season games which placed him seventh amongst WHL defencemen.
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
By getting this done before December 31, #Flames essentially get a free year of AHL development in 2018-2019 with entry level slide.

There was a decent FN article by Freeway that outlined what the structure of his ELC may be like.

FlamesNation - Juuso Valimaki's ELC should be pretty simple

Quote:
Brannstrom and Liljegren have already signed their entry-level contracts with their new clubs, which provide some strong indicators of what Valimaki’s contract will look like. Both Brannstrom and Liljegren received the rookie maximum base salary of $925,000. Brannstrom, selected before Valimaki, reportedly received $450,000 in performance bonuses while Liljegren, selected after Valimaki, received $400,000. Thus, a probable contract for Valimaki will probably land somewhere around a $925,000 base salary with $425,000 in performance bonuses.

Really love how this pick solidified the prospect pool we have on defense in the system.

Remember it is possible for Valimaki to play in the AHL this season. He is on loan from his Euro team to Tri Cities so the NHL/CHL agreement doesn't apply.

I don't think that's the case. Folks in both Finland and Tri-City told me he's not under contract in Finland.

I see they posted a large print version of the contract behind him on the wall.

The ELC will slide, but I think he'll be waiver eligible in the final year of it (21-22). If he were an earlier birthday the ELC would still run to 21-22, but he'd have to play another year of junior, but he'd be waiver-exempt in 21-22.

Either way, glad to have him signed. Hopefully he starts looking like a top 4 guy just as Giordano stops looking like one.

Because he was drafted from a Canadian Hockey League team (with a CHL contract) – we originally thought he was still Finland property, but have since confirmed with a few sources that he’s free and clear of European ties – Valimaki has to return to the Western Hockey League’s Tri-City Americans for 2017-18 (unless he cracks the Flames roster, which is extremely unlikely).

This slide potential sets up his development trajectory nicely:

Draft + 1 = WHL
Draft + 2 = AHL
Draft +3 = AHL, first year of ELC not sliding
Draft + 4 = AHL/NHL (potential to win job, especially if he is developing fast and Flames need to restructure top 4 after Brodie extension)
Draft + 5 = NHL on a bargain contract

What's the depth in Stockton looking like anyways? Seems there was a good minors reshuffle by Treliving this off season.

Out: Kanzig, Culkin, Morrision, Falkovsky (echl) Hickey (possible signing traded) Wotherspoon and Kulak possible graduation
In: Ollas-Mattsson (fingers crossed) Josh Healy (fulltime)

Fox and Valimaki joining fulltime next year will be interesting.

Anywho, congrats to Tom Yates!

I've reached out to the Americans (the team, not the FX TV show or country) for clarification. Nevertheless, he's signed. Yay.

I thought Valimaki's camp might want to push it past December...

Welp, another feather in Treliving's headdress this off-season.
