Default The Last of Us - HBO Series [Spoilers after episodes have aired -- no game spoilers]

The much-anticipated HBO adaptation of the video game, The Last of Us is premiering tonight on HBO/Crave.

I thought it would be good to have a thread specifically to discuss the series rather than the existing thread which is primarily focused on the production in and around Calgary.

Please don't post spoilers for an episode until after it has aired in Calgary (around 7:00 PM Sunday nights). Also, avoid spoilers for events that happened in the games, especially if those events haven't happened in the show yet.

Also, be forewarned if an episode has aired and you visit this thread before watching the new episode, you do risk seeing spoilers out in the open.

I liked it a lot.

Calgary looks rougher than the last time I visited.

Really enjoyed that. I've never played the game, so I can't speak to the aesthetic of the show but it looks really cool. Also Thandie Newton's daughter looks just like her (Nico Parker).

Not a big fan of zombie stuff, but I got a bit hooked on it. Didn't even know it was filmed in Alberta until I was already watching the show, very cool. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

That was amazing and Depeche Mode’s Never Let Me Down Again was top notch!

That was awesome! What a way to start the show off!

The first segment where the outbreak starts and they're trying to escape was top notch and what a way to end it off with Depeche Mode.

This show is visually fantastic.

Cant wait for next Sunday!

Good start to the series. Not played the games, despite owning them. Don’t want to till the show continues beyond the storyline of the games to avoid spoilers.

I know a few people who were extras in the production, but it turns out I know someone else who actually had a couple lines (and now their character is dead). So that’s pretty cool.

I read somewhere that HBO does not plan to go beyond the games.

Also, the first episode was great!

Well it's only 1 episode but this is already the best movie/show adaptation of a video game ever, and by a wide margin. The infected grandma tweaking out in the blurry background, the little details pulled in word for word from the game ("I sell hardcore drugs"), the cinematography, all brilliant. And I'm sure that starting a family in between my first playthrough of LoU and this series played a role, but holy #### Sarah's death hit me way harder, even knowing it was coming

As for Ellie, I was never a part of the hate train for Bella Ramsay but I was curious to see if she would try to match the game or put a different spin on the character. Soon as she dropped her first "Mother####er!" though my first thought was "Nope, that's full Ellie". Every casting decision so far has been nailed 100%, I'm going to be glued to my TV every Sunday night to watch this same-day as it airs, which I almost never do with any show

Yup, Marlene is straightup the voice actor in the game.

Gustavo Santaolalla and his music are still awesome.

I'm really surprised at comments about Calgarians not being able to tell it was shot in Alberta. We didn't feel that way at all. We've noticed many Calgary area things just in episode 1 alone.

Best part of episode 1 in terms of Calgary stuff was how I would hang out at my buddy's place a lot and he blew up (as a huge Last of Us fan) and told me that film crews showed up across the street at Lord Shaughnessy High School. He sent me so many pictures and videos of everything.

Then tonight we watched together during the school scene where we could almost see his house, but could see all his neighbours houses as Sara leaves school and gets on the bus.

It really shows what happens during big budget filming vs low budget filming. I have dozens of pics of his street and he said there were over a hundred visible extras outside the school wth constant shooting, with seven days of filming with what amounted to what? A minute of screen time!?

Yeah I saw a good deal of Calgary in episode 1.

It’s off to a good start. Pedro still doesn’t hit Joel for me, but Bella was really strong as Ellie.

With the camera over him as he's sleeping/waking up before leaving the QZ, he really hit as Joel (visually at least) for me.

Official HBO podcast, hosted by Troy Baker (voice actor for Joel in the game) with Neil Druckmann (co-creator of the game) and Craig Mazin (writer/director of the show, and for Chernobyl:
