last night on the news some local calgarians felt that putting up barriers along 7th might be justified.......personally i am not a fan of this......
Also on the news, they said that all three drivers have been charged with running a red light. Obviously, if people don't run red lights, they won't get hit by trains. A motorist running a red light anywhere else in the city is virtually a non-issue, but it also doesn't impact thousands upon thousands of commuters the way way it does when the train is shutdown to cleanup.
I honestly don't think that much can be done. People still find a way to get hit by the train with crossing arms in place, both on foot and in cars. You could increase the penalty for running a red light on the LRT to $2000, but if someone didn't think that a FAST GIANT TRAIN, a wrecked car, and the potential of injury/death wasn't enough of a reason to pay attention, there's little hope for them anyway.

I could see crossing arms being of use on 4th ave. With both of the accidents on Friday, the driver of the car would have been trying to execute a right turn on red. While there are big signs, turning right on a red is something that is usually legal. It just so happens that a red light here means a train is coming; it never means there is opposing vehicle traffic.
By the way I read the story this morning, it sounds like each person got a $172 fine, but their insurance didn't have to cover the damage to the trains? I sure hope my reading comprehension wasn't working well today.
How is this different from someone running a red and hitting some one in the car would had the green? Wouldn't the person who ran the red have to cover all damanges to the other car (under their insurance of course)? Does this change if it's a train?

Read this in the paper today. Not sure if it's just a stupid headline, but I can't believe we have to remind people not to drive into trains...
Yes I read the Sun at lunch today, it's all that was around.
You know that the paper is aimed at the lowest mouth breathers out there right? I would suggest it is exactly that type of headline that Sun readers need......

Transit has the ability to go after these individuals for the costs of disruption to transit service. I dont know if they ever have, but I am sure if the delay was long enough they may consider it. I would be scared to see how much that would be!

It's probably more similar to somebody running a red light and then proceeding to hit a brick wall. Yes, they're at fault, but the damage to the brick wall would be minimal.
Of course, I skipped a couple of pages - was there actually any damage to the C-Train that needed to be paid for?

Scroll up like half a page.

The two crashes on Friday incurred repair costs between $100,000 and $200,000.
Thanks. Tapatalk's page breaks do not necessarily align with the website, or even other users.
Anyway, from the news, it's not really clear did they just run a red light that was red for a while, or did it just turn and the drivers kept going like a lot of people here in Calgary seem prone to do?
It seems like a lot of the Ctrain crossings outside of downtown have a pretty long grace period between when the bars go down and the train actually appears.

The first accident Friday morning- there was a good second between the Ctrain laying on the horn and the impact. Our first reaction was the two were unrelated, and the crash was just the garbage guys in the alley dropping the dumpsters like they often do.
