How was Frolik lucky? He has pretty much played exactly as he was expected to, and as he had done prior to coming to Calgary.

Frolik probably looks okay on average and Backlund probably does well but not as good. Kind of moot to wonder how things would be if two players that the coaches found chemistry with didn't play together.

Lucic at $6 x 3 years - great contract
at $6 x 4 years - decent contract
at $6 x 5 years - ugh, but you have to overpay FAs, so you close your eyes and take it
at $6 x 6 years - that's way too long and is going to suck
at $6 x 7 years - good god, no... that is a serious albatross

Purely anecdotal, but still:
As soon as the Flames got him (literally that day), all my Winnipeg-based Jets buddies texted to say that they were upset the Jets didn't re-sign him and that we (Flames fans) were going to love this guy: can play anywhere in the lineup and works hard every game.
They were right. And it's fun to wear my #67 Flames jersey all over The Forks when I go to the Peg in the summer.

Would be great to pair on the top line, or with Bennett.

Not sure where to put this, but apparently Jyrki Jokipakka has been told he's not getting qualified, and he is off to Europe.
He looked good right after the trade, sure didn't follow it up very good this season though.

We should sign him and protect him in the expansion draft.

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan says trading Alex Ovechkin right now doesn't make sense "from an organizational point of view," but he would consider moving his captain "maybe at some point if there's a legitimate hockey deal that came available."

Also read that it appears the Caps are moving on from Alzner. Much of what I have read regarding Alzner over the past few weeks is he is very overrated and someone the Flames should avoid signing

it all depends on cost. Alzner on a 5 year deal at 5 mill, ya that's a hard pass. But if you can get Alzner on a deal at 3-4 mill then I think it's a no brainer.
I don't think he'll sign that kind of a deal but I think he'd be a good addition at the right price, but someone is most likely going to over pay for him.
It seems like the caps are going to make some shake ups or at least they're open to some, the flames should target them and try to pluck a player or two from them while pawning off some "grit" players that the caps seem to be missing... guys like Brouwer, Bouma, Stajan and the rest of the guys the Flames need to get rid of lol.

Alzner probably ends up in Dallas. Just a guess. They need D and only have $9.5 million committed to 4 D next season as of now. None of their 3 RFA's Dmen will cost much either.

Vegas is also a legit target considering the McPhee connection

I suppose, but you'd think they would rather wait until July 1st to do that because if they sign him in the window they give up selecting a player from WSH, and Grubauer or Orlov seem much more appealing than Alzner in my eyes.
So if they wait until July 1st and I was Alzner, I would rather sign with a team like Dallas than an expansion team. Going to be a fun off-season.

I was thinking they would be an option July 1 not expansion. Vegas might offer more money than Dallas? That would be the reason I could see him going there.

Just my opinion, but i think people are seriously under-rating Stone. Why do we need to look at getting the shiny new toy on defence, when Stone is as good or better than most of the options being discussed? He may have had a slighly down year recuperating from injuries, but he's a legit top-4 guy and fits well with Brodie. A few years ago, he was considered a stud on the Coyotes blueline. I think a top 4 of Gio-Dougie-Brodie-Stone matches up with any D corps in the league, and I hope we re-sign him.

Tavarves straight up for Ovechkin; Kovalchuk signs in Long Island to play alongside his fellow Ruskie. Everyone wins!
Or Ovechkin for Tarasenko. Another move that I think makes a lot of sense.

I want nothing to do with Alzner. Bring back Stone and let some kids play.

I would think NYI and STL would gag at those proposals to be honest
