Icon42 Steve Ott named Blues assistant coach

In a surprise, Blues name Steve Ott assistant coach

Pretty wild last few days for St. Louis on the coaching front.

After gutting Mike Yeo’s staff of four assistants, then hiring hiring Darryl Sydor, the Blues went totally off the grid on Friday by announcing longtime NHLer Steve Ott would become Yeo’s new assistant.

“Steve was a competitor on the ice as a player and I expect him to bring that energy in this role,” Yeo said in a release. “He was highly respected as a player and a person among his teammates and I believe he will be a huge asset to our staff.”

He was 'highly respected as a player and a person?'

By whom?

I remember some commentators would talk about how well he played Iginla. He played him the absolute worst way possible, by pissing him off. I always couldn't wait to see Ott poke the bear.

I'm not even certain Steve Ott would have respected Steve Ott as a player.

Steve Ott knows who Steve Ott is.

Maybe he'll be punching his own players in the back of the head from the bench.

The worst part is I keep wanting to say "STEVE OTT!", which just completely ruins "STEVE HOLT!" for me.

Unusual in this day and age for a guy to go from player immediately to assistant NHL coach. Whatever else he is, Ott must be a pretty sharp guy.

He was a Hab for a very short time and I liked him immediately. Why? The very first practice, he's on the ice helping Galchenyuk with his faceoffs. First day and he's already helping one of his new teammates. I think he'll do well as an assistant coach.
