ALL ABOARD!
|
The last day of the repair class was as good as the first.
We took apart and cleaned/lubed the crankset and headset. Learned how to true a wheel both with a shop machine and using our bike in an emergency situation. We learned how to drain/replace hydraulic brakes.
Finally, the instructor helped everyone with issues they found on their bike the day before. One gentleman replaced the cassette on his road bike. Another replaced the tire and chain on her mountain bike. I just replaced the bar tape...but he showed me how to do it properly so I'm happy about that. The bike feels like new too. Now I'm going to practice on my Cross bike.
I now have my Basic Bike Mechanic Certificate! Which is on the fridge next to the kid's drawings.

After your posts I started looking for classes in Vancouver. There aren't any exactly what I'm looking for, but I'll keep searching. Most of my knowledge to work on a bike has come from a book I bought at mec, and YouTube videos from Global Cycling Network ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuT...OkJ0H_GAztWt0Q). I also like GCN's humorous videos.
I really enjoy the look of your bike. I'm a big orange and black fan, so I appreciate all the orange. I wanted something like that colour scheme, but my Cervelo is red and black, and then my Felt is black and white. I just kept accenting everything with red, but I envy the orange.

I'll have to suppress the urge to be a pansy and take the bus this week. One slushy day down, five to go! It's a mess out there this morning. I could feel my chain disintegrating with all of the snirt going through the drive train.

Snirt wasn't to bad. The really fun stuff was on the end of a few streets that didn't melt to pavement, so the ice ruts are deadly. Not helped by being totally hidden by just enough snow to make them slicker than Saul Goodman. I was just enjoying the brighter skies, and now realize the time change is this weekend, so back to darkness! Ugh.

I'm all about the darkness on the morning ride, you merely adopted it Fuzz.

Ugh, so to start with, yesterday's ride home was miserable. In the 7th st cycle track heading north, a car ran the red making a left, just in front of me, and I had to delay my start as he hauled ass around the corner. Which I guess was good, becuase it delayed me from getting hit by the the guy making an illegal left on red at the next intersection. He probably would have smoked me.
Then I get to 10th st bike lanes, which the city had made no attempt to do anything about for clearing, so it was an uphill slog into the bitter NE wind through 5cm of snirt, but I also had something else slowing me down....
This morning I drag my bike out of the shed, and it involved more dragging that it should. Turns out the rear brakes are seized on! That would explain the added pain yesterday. They are v-brakes(which I replaced last year!) so I loosened the retaining bolts a smidge and they regained enough freedom to not be clenched tight to the rim. Still no bounce-back though. I'll have to take a look when it isn't -200 outside. Probably need some grease or something? All the salt has not been kind.

Ugh that all sucks. I've had enough of this cold so I decided not to ride today. May wait until next week with the promise of warmer temps.

I rode Monday and wussed out when I saw the temperature the next 3 days. My wife lost my warm gloves, so I'm using that as my excuse this week. Double digit plus temps for next week!

^The Trek looks cooler. That's all that really matters for road bikes, right?

I just give up and buy a new rear brake every year for $25. The Shimano ones I buy have a pivot internal to the brake itself that gets gummed up and I've never figured out how to fix it.
I'm not sure if there are more maintainable v-brakes out there, if there are, someone please chime in and I'll stop throwing them in the dump.

I'm partial to Trek's and have the Domain 4.3 Disc that I love.
Both lean more towards the touring/comfort end of road bikes. They're built for comfort over long distances than for being uber lightweight/speedy. I chose mine because I'd be using it more for my commute than for breaking too many Strava records.
Can't speak to the difference in components though.

They're both rocking Ultegra, that's good stuff. Not sure on wheels, though.

What pisses me off is my last ones lasted 18 years.
