Post Down Goes Brown: what if every team had to do all-time protected lists?

Personally, I have to put Kipper on there over Vernon.

Would be cool to do this with specific years of players, e.g. 2001-02 Iggy.

In theory, this also includes the Atlanta Flames, but nobody from that era makes the cut. To nobody’s surprise, this team will be dominated by players from the team’s late-’80s golden age.

Forwards: Jarome Iginla, Theo Fleury, Joe Nieuwendyk, Gary Roberts, Kent Nilsson, Lanny McDonald, Johnny Gaudreau

Defencemen: Al MacInnis, Gary Suter, Mark Giordano

Goalie: Mike Vernon

Toughest omissions: Miikka Kiprusoff is the franchise leader in games and wins, but Vernon’s Cup run trumps him. Meanwhile, we found room for Gaudreau but not Sean Monahan, and Joey Mullen also misses the cut.

Vernon was a good goalie that won cups behind amazing teams. Kiprusoff was at one point the best goalie in the world. Don't see the argument for Vernon.

Drop Roberts and put Makarov on that list.
Drop Nilsson and put Loob on too.

Agreed. Kiprusoff was so good that The Hockey News identified him as the best hockey player in the world heading into the 2005–06 season.

Joel Otto, Joe Mullen and Doug Gilmour should be there in place of Roberts, McDonald, and Gaudreau. And agreed with Kiprusoff

Too early to include the new guys on this list since they've done very little.

I loved Loob as much as the next guy, but Nilsson was all world.

Mike Vernon (no slouch when it comes to ego) himself admits Miikka Kiprusoff was the better of the two.

Hard to leave Mullen off the list. I'd take Roberts off instead. And, it's gonna be unpopular, but for me, Lanny had the one great season right after he came from Colorado, but aside from that was just a really good player at best. Mullen was a bigger on-ice contributor for longer IMO. I'm pretty iffy about putting Gaudreau in after only three seasons.

So Mullen and Makarov instead for me. Looking back on the stats, Robert Reichel is seriously underrated.

I'd pick Regehr ahead of Gio.

Goalie: Kipper

That's my team. No Johnny, No Theo.
Tough, big and skilled.
As much as I love guys like Kent and Makarov - the team has enough skill that you don't need anyone that takes shifts off. The above group is uber skilled, would score tons, and would be an absolute nightmare to play against.

Otto is there simply to win face offs, after which the Flames simply don't give the puck back to the other team.

Here's an interesting wrinkle: they could have had Doug Gilmour.

I find it crazy people want to take Roberts out. Yes, lets remove the 50+ goal power forward who played the game as hard as anyone.

When Roberts put it all together offensively in the early 90s and before the injury bug started to really take its toll (and even in spite of that for a while), Roberts was a true impact power forward out there - one of the best in the league for a 4-5 year stretch in an age where Lindros, Neeley, Shanahan, etc. were also in that sort of peer group.

I'm not sure if he would be in my top 7, personally, but him being on other's lists is completely justifiable in my opinion. He was a beast.

He hit 50 goals once and that was ALL Makarov. Not only that he promised to name his first son Sergei if he hit 50 goals that year....
