Lol, it actually does if you think about it. If you do not celebrate sportsmanship, then really, you don't really care about the integrity of sport. So then I'd argue you aren't a fan of the sport itself, you're just a fan of the team you cheer for winning.
I feel shame
It's like the Premier League giving a team award for committing the least fouls, or whatever. Im not sure it should be celebrated lol.

They NEED a defensive-defenseman award. Especially now that they're trying to get with the "advanced" stats
Even with the extra tools those metrics offer it's still quite hard to assess defensive defenseman value. And much of the PHWA are morons, they don't stand a chance of applying the tools correctly.

A Flame (and one of our best players) is nominated for a major NHL award and the response is:
- he whines too much to win
- he doesn't deserve to win it this year
- the award is dumb/lame and shouldn't exist
Seriously? That's the best CP can do? Why bother being a fan if you can't celebrate the achievements of our players. /rant
I can say whatever I feel like saying. I think that Johnny put in a sub par season, and did not play with much heart.
This is my opinion, might not be shared by all, but mine all the same.
Tell me that every forum member is super happy with him this year.
I wonder if Granlund and Tarasenko had to put up as many slashes and abuse as Gaudreau had to put up with. People give him slack for one event of diving, but what do you expect from a guy who doesn't slash back or bother getting involved in scrums? His defense is either do nothing, rely on the referee's (which hasn't helped), fight back (he's not a fighter), or persuading the referees by a little embellishment.
If you ask me, Gaudreau wouldn't have to dive at times if referee's did their ####ing job.
Unless it's at practice, he doesn't have to worry about the Super Slash Brothers, Staal and Suter.
I would respect this award much more if it was dmen up for it. Nik Lindstrom should be the poster-boy for how to play amazing tight D without taking penalties.
Not sure who today's equivalent would be.

Roman Josi?

Seems a lot of people agree with you. Bob McKenzie said his #1 vote for the Byng this year would be Klefbom. Averages 20+ minutes, only 6 PIMs this year, +7 rating (altohugh mostly due to being paired with Larrson)

A couple candidates (all these guys were 20 minutes per night or above)
Nick Leddy: 12 PIMs
Tyler Myers: 13 PIMs (this one surprised me)
Zach Werenski: 14 PIMS
Chris Tanev: 14
Duncan Keith: 16 Pims playing 25 minutes per night!
And yeah Roman Josi 18 PIMs playing 25/night
Cam Fowler: 20 PIMs, 25/night
I would nominate Keith, Josi and Nick Leddy.

Comes down to him or Keith for me. Keith is just so hard to play against defensively and matches against the very best players every night - so I think his number impress me slightly more.
And to answer my own question - he's also probably the closest equivalent to Lindstrom in today's game.
Keith should never be considered given his dirty history.
He's far from demonstrating sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, he just doesn't get called as often as he should. Remember when he turned his stick over and gave Gaudreau a nasty slash in the ribs?
