There's our daily dose of panic. Its the middle of August, we still have a long way to go.
I would like to see a contract sooner than later. Bennett is a big piece of the team and instrumental going forward.

This lack of Bennett signing is like that annoying scab you have. You don't want to pick at it and make it worse, but it still bugs you.

I don't think Bennett is in any position to play hard ball so I don't understand the hold up.

What will Sam Bennett get?
^ Maybe no one is playing hardball?

The easy contracts are already done.. I don't understand why people think it's a bad thing for the team to negotiate hard.

Ferland couldn't get inked to 3 years because the Flames and his agent couldn't agree on what that 3rd year in UFA was going to be worth. I think something similar might be happening with Bennett's camp, but he's not in much of a bargaining position.
Either way, Sam's contract is going to be the first high-profile prospect bridge we've had since god knows when. Treliving isn't just going to pay for unknown potential, as this is likely going to set a precedent for any future RFA contracts he signs. If anything I'd give him the Backlund treatment.

He signed a 5 year $3.5M AAV deal. That gives Bennett more money than he is worth by at least $1M per but the Flames buy all but one year of rfa status. Bennett hopefully goes for an 8 year deal at 26 which would only pay him until 34?

3 years @ $3.5M should be fair for Bennett's camp, and I think it's worth having the AAV $0.5-$1.0M higher if it means getting that 3rd year. Would breakdown something like:
Year 1 - $2.25M
Year 2 - $3.25M
Year 3 - $5.00M
Stone, Brouwer, and Frolik would all come off the books at the conclusion of this deal, and likely replaced from within the system.

$3.5 on a 3 year deal is an over-payment for what he's accomplished so far, but it's probably worth it in order to avoid potential salary cap headaches after only a 1 or 2 year deal. I see no reason why Bennett wouldn't accept that deal. If Bennett remains as the 3rd line center it's unlikely he would be able to increase his numbers significantly this season. If he gets 20 goals and 20 assists it would be a good season for him, but still wouldn't result in huge payday.

Year 3 he has to be qualified at the $5M so unless the Flames renounce his rfa rights he is going to get at least $5M per on the next contract that would take him to UFA most likely.

On another note it looks like HF Oil have done a nice job convincing the Lemmings on that site that Bennett is basically a bust. He is a throw in on a lot of Flames proposals and appears to have less value than a 2nd rounder these days. It doesn't help when Leaf fans jump on and start talking about crap like Bennett isn't worth Kapanen or Bennett and Dougie for Kadri and Liligren is a bad trade for Toronto.
I can't wait for Benny to breakout and silence the haters like Dougienhas done.

I might be missing something, but why?
Qualifying offer is just 100% of salary the year before if over a million.

His Qualifying Offer would be 100% of his salary (not cap hit) the year before. If his salary the year before is $5 million, the QO would be $5 million.

Oh sorry, yeah. Misunderstood when he said "year 3 has to be qualified at 5M" not that year 3 would mean he has to to be qualified. Gotcha.

Backlund should always be a reminder to Flame fans to be patient, Bennett was awesome in the playoffs. He is still devoloping as a solid centre, Oilers are still pissed at Yakapov but he has nowhere near the heart and desire of Bennett.
