Hmm, perhaps a trip to Pie Cloud is in order on this rainy day...

Obviously the owners of Good Earth feel they can succeed in that location despite all of the competition.
Good Earth is my go to during the work week, I really like their coffee. I would usually hit Vendome on weekends but found their coffee good but way too strong. It was like crack coffee.

So I probably would walk an extra block to pick up a coffee on Saturday/Sunday. Their baked goods are very good as well, as is their hot lunches.

I think this is great news. I am not a fan of Tims, Second Cup, Starbucks, so having another choice nearby that is great quality only makes things better for us in the neighbourhood.

The family and I took a walk in the rain on Saturday and visited Pie Cloud for lunch.

I had the chicken and waffles for lunch, my wife had their burger. Mine was good, nothing fancy or tricky to chicken and waffles. The burger was fresh, but lacked any real flavour.

For the pies we tried the Key Lime and Banana Cream. A pretty generous slice of pie, but not sure if it was $7 worth. Both were tasty, but hardly a trans-formative pie experience that I was hoping for.

Now keep in mind I am holding these pies to a standard set by two places that I have found to have the most delicious pies I have ever tasted:

-Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop, Olowalu, Maui http://www.leodas.com/
-Bashaw Meats and Sausage, Bashaw, Alberta https://plus.google.com/111976149218...ut?gl=ca&hl=en

The pies from Pie Cloud just didn't hit those heights. $7 for a slice compares to a whole pie from Bashaw for anywhere from $8-$11 depending on the pie. Homemade by the butchers mother. Leoda's is pricey (and in USD) but you take a bite and it makes Maui even more of a paradise than before.

Service was ok, a little slow but I wasn't going to be hard on them for that on only their second day of operation. There was a fairly steady stream of guests coming in, so clearly the word was out that they were open.

I hope they can tweak the operation and step their pie game up. I'd like to see them stay around so that another unique offering stays in Kensington.

Oh man that sounds amazing. I'm hooked on their Cinamon Plum that unfortunatly only comes out around Christmas(I usually buy 2 or 3 bags) and Lime Ginger.

Tandoori Hut is gone, replaced by Ramen house.

https://www.facebook.com/tandoorihut

And that's a wrap! Thank you for ‪#‎20years‬ of memories!

On February 14, 1995 a couple along with their three children decided to take a risk and open up one of Calgary's first Indian restaurants. They dedicated their lives into making Tandoori Hut one of the most successful restaurants in the city. They met new people, made wonderful friends and watched families grow. Twenty years later the family has made the difficult decision to close the doors. February 14, 2015 will be the last day of business and the end of a chapter filled with memories which will last a lifetime.

It seems like the Strip on 10th is really stepping up to push the panhandlers away from the neighborhood. I hardly see the usual characters sitting outside Safeway or Taste of Ginger asking for change.

Although you still see the hipster pan handlers asking for change to help get them to west coast.

I think they're all around The Roasterie - or pacing between traffic at red lights along Memorial at 10th.

Went and tried out Lot 102 (formerly The Bottlehouse) yesterday evening with my wife and daughter #1.

http://lotrestaurants.ca/

This was actually the first time I'd ever been in that location, in the last few years of living in the neighbourhood we never made it in when it was the Bottlehouse.

First things first, another restaurant in Kensington that is kid friendly (until 8pm) and even has a little kids menu.

They also have a little open space just past the entrance complete with a foosball table, my daughter really enjoyed playing while we waited for the meals to come out.

Started with the Calamari and my wife tried the Tomato and Red Pepper soup. Both were very tasty. I liked the different flavour on the calamari brought out by the cornmeal crust and creole sauce.

For the mains the kidlet had the chicken fingers and fries, my wife had the lamb burger with rosemary lemon fries and I had this glorious creation:

The Smokey burger. Two patties, bacon, pickled jalapenos, smoked cheddar, pineapple, and carmelized onions, all on a pretzel bun (I upgraded to that). Really good burger, didn't look too large on the wooden tray it was brought out on but by the end it was more than enough burger for me.

Service was very good, 3 guys working last night. One behind the bar and the other two doing a great job of staying on top of all tables. Their south facing patio along Memorial was full (as you can imagine on such a beautiful day) and provides more than ample opportunity for people and car watching.

This was a solid visit, and we'll definitely be going back to try out more of the menu.

That corner is a killer for restaurants. Somehow really good restaurants on that corner seem to continuously fail, while Julio's remains, despite being somewhat lacklustre. Will have to try that burger before it closes. Maybe as a single party version though, don't want to lessen my lifespan.

How were the kids foods? Hard to find restaurants that put some effort into children's meals.

Bottlehouse's food was highly regarded until the Peruvian chef left to start his own place. After that it was decent, but went slowly downhill.

Am curious to see if the new place holds it's own. The new condo population in the area will hopefully have a positive effect on the quality and quantity of restaurants in the area.

Would you know what his new restaurant is called?
