My opinion on Byram is known by anyone who is part of the CPHL. This is going to age poorly for the Avs.

Mittelstadt is leading Buffalo in scoring this season and is 24th in the entire league for 5v5 scoring. Looks like a perfect second line center for Colorado.

Colorado doesn't really need him to be a #1 center though.
He's already a good 2nd line center.

If Landeskog comes back they are going to be stacked up front.

That was a shot at Pronman, not at what Colorado is acquiring.

That wasn't clear, I am sorry.

Midelstadt is a great fit for Colorado, and I think they a savvy to move Byram now.

Avs have 4.9 in deadline cap available still, once Nich comes back I don't know what's left but they can still addand they still have assets to burn if they want to win the arms race.

And if he does that's great for him after missing 2 FULL Seasons and there being vocal discussions about never being able to play a game again.

Not some master plan to circumvent the cap...but you might as take advantage of it if the opportunity arises.

Buffalo is an weird spot where they've pretty well already maxed out on huge contracts but still are not good.

Next year they've got:
Dahlin - $11m
Skinner - $9m
Power - $8.35
Thompson - $7.14M
Cozens - $7.1M

Mittelstadt is going to be another guy getting paid after this year. Pretty hard to have 6 guys over $7m (and also still suck)

I never said it was a master plan to circumvent the cap in this case. I am saying if he could return earlier then the end of the regular season he won't though, why would he? It helps his team and lessens an injury risk. I don't blame him or the Avs, everybody is doing it now.

Both trades the Avs gave up the more expensive contract too. They could still add a goalie after all this. If they do, they are set up as no team in the league can match their top end, Makar is just too big of a difference maker to go with Mackinnon and Rantanen

I wonder if the Avs might be interested in a Markstrom or a Hanifin to solidify their back end now, especially with middling goaltending and having traded away Byram.

Edit: I see they also got Walker, but still maybe a destination for Markstrom? That would right away make them the Cup favourites.

Darn. I was hoping that Byrum would be the centerpiece of a deal with Markstrom. The exact kind of young, potentially #1 dman that we could use. going forward.

As long as every west team makes better moves and gets even stronger than Edmonton. This fits that description. Sean Walker + Casey Middlestadt >>>> Adam Henrique and Sam "waiver wire" Carrick.

I'm surprised the Flames didn't take a run at Byram. Seems like someone we should have targeted? Didn't have the assets they wanted I guess.
