looking at the quote of their head coach after yesterday's win, I have no doubt that he's their #1 guy. I won't be surprised if Stolarz gets a game or parts of a game against a bottom feeder (much like Gillies played a period vs Germany last year), but Gillies will clearly get most of the workload.

"Today is probably the type of game that we have to win, a 3-2 type game, with this team," said U.S. coach Don Lucia. "Jon Gillies did a good job in net. He needs to be our best player night in and night out. The guys that we need to score scored a couple goals tonight. We got pucks down below the goal line and started to grind things out, which is where we'll be at our best."

Gillies was named player of the game for the US yesterday.

Remember when the goalie was the short fat kid who couldn't skate very well?
Demko - 6'3"; Gillies - 6'5"; Stolarz - 6'6"

I have never been more excited about a prospect drafted outside of the 1st round. I would put down $100 on Gillies playing at least 500 games as a starter in the NHL. Gaudreau comes close but I still wonder if his size will prevent him from being a great NHLer.

Wow that is bold. I'd take the bet but I'm cheering hard for gillies too!

It is bold, but when you think about it... Gillies is the starting goalie for a country that is a legitimate hockey power. He is no doubt one of the best goalie prospects in the world at this point.
As we all know, the jump from prospect to NHL player is a big one, but I think he is just as likely to make it as anyone else with his pedigree.

You make a good point. And I bet we make space for him to thrive once he is ready to make the jump to pro. At least I hope we do. He should get every chance for success as we don't have a proven NHL starter yet. The future is Ortio and Gillies. Hopefully Ramo and or Berra progress well enough over the next season and a bit so we can trade one or both for sole picks or solid prospects.

I haven't had a chance to watch any of the WJC anyone have any updates on how he looked? With the US already out of the tourney was any of that on his shoulders?

He looked shaky, though I think the American defence was awful. Very little support
Though I think the result of the tournament is exactly why there should be no rush to bring him to the pros. Let him play 4 years in college than a couple in the AHL, and hopefully he can be a NHL starter by his mid-20s.

He's still just behind Gaudreau for me, even if he was shaky. Spend the next 2 years in the AHL and then let him try to make the team.

He's still top-3 for me. I don't think he's challenged enough in college. That's part of the reason for him to play in the AHL next season.

Exactly. I have no desire to see him continue to play in college for this reason.

Didn't get to see any of the US games, but it is a little dissapointing for Gillies.
Was hoping he'd be our John Gibson; however, having said that, Gibson had an all star defense in front of him with the likes of Seth Jones, Jacob Trouba, and Shayne Gostisbehere. McCabe, Murphy, Reilly, and Seiloff were no slouches either.

I'm interested in seeing MENTALLY how Gillies reacts to some adversity.

I watched all the US games, and Gillies wasn't great. He made a few timely saves, and did a fairly good job keeping the US in games, but his rebound control was questionable at best. Talking to people who watch him in Providence a lot this isn't normally an issue for him, so I don't want to really hold such a small sample size against him.
We also had a much, much weaker defense core this year compared to last. A lot less size, and a lot less "character" as well. Sieloff, who barely made the team last year (although he gradually increased his role as the tournament progressed) would have likely been a 2/3 for us this year.

Hard to fault him too much for the 5 on 3 goals.
