Horrible news to wake up to this morning. Especially since I watched him dominate the Nationals just a few days ago. He is so beloved in Miami. He was not born in Miami but he may as well have been because of the large Cuban community in Miami. Think Iginla after his first 50 goal season (also at age 24) and you will get a sense of Fernandez's popularity in Miami prior to his death.
This is even more shocking than Oscar Taveras' death a few years ago as Oscar was only a prospect (and a very fine one at that), while Fernandez was a bonafide ace and stud. It's probably even more shocking than Lyman Bostock's death, I think. The only thing comparable I can think of right now, in terms of a superstar athlete's untimely death, is maybe Roberto Clemente. What would be the closest analogue for hockey? Pelle Lindbergh, maybe?

I read that he was supposed to start Sunday, but his start got pushed back a day because he threw too much in his last game.
I am assuming if he was scheduled to start he would not have been out last night.
I wonder if the driver of the boat was aware that the jetty even existed, or if he had no idea

Similar, though off season, boat accident happened in 1993 to some Indians pitchers. Two dead (Steve Olin and Tim Crews), and Bob Ojeda hurt badly. Terrible tragedies both times.

Just watched a YouTube video of him and what an incredible life story. He saved his mom from drowning when he came to the U.S.
Such a tragic death. Very sad story, RIP.

I am admittedly not a huge baseball fan.The more I read about Jose and watch clips the more this incident reminds me of Pelle Lindbergh. It is another life cut short but such tragic situations.

I watched the highlight package from the game last night, and got a lump in my throat.
the more I hear about the kid, the nicer he seems.

It takes a lot to make me tear up, last night was one of those times when I actually had to go for a walk.
such a tragic thing to have happen to a young man.

That home run trot was pretty emotional

Yeah, the whole highlights package was tough to watch and Dee Gordon's homerun was pretty emotional. Even D'Arnaud said looking at Gordon touch the plate after the homer, even he had tears.
RIP Jose Fernandez.

seems that the marlin's as a team did a great job to honour their missing teammate.
one question though, does anyone else think that Dee Grodon was provided a really nice pitch to hit? since none of the networks were saying anything about it, I am wondering if I am off base on that thought/observation?

The pitch was right down the middle but the odds of Dee Gordon hitting a homerun are very slim. He has 9 HRs to date in 2000+ ABs in his career. He's more of a contact hitter than a power guy.

He also hit the ball into the upper deck. He later told an interviewer he has never hit on into the upper deck before, not even during BP.

I wondered the same. 85 mph fast ball. No idea what the pitcher usually throws. 2-0 pitch though, wonder what the first two were.

It sucks that his friends tried to talk him out of going and some people knew it was a bad idea. It just makes it that much more preventable.
I can't say I knew who he was before but stuff like this is always sad. By all accounts he was a good guy and a very talented guy. I love that GIF as well.
