Several people have already commented on the stupidity of this, but I thought I would add some numbers to it. Here are the goals from the 5 players mentioned (and their ages), over the last 3 years (player, player, total):
Beleskey (27), Hayes (25):
14/15: 22, 19, 41
13/14: 9, 11, 20
1213: 8, 1, 9
Lucic (27), Smith (24), Hamilton (22):
14/15: 18, 13, 10, 41
13/14: 24, 20, 7, 51
12/13: 7, 3, 5, 15
So, while it's true that the incoming players had the same number of goals as that outgoing players last year (yes, we're ignoring all other facets of the game here), those same players were outscored 51 to 20 the prior year and 15 to 9 in the lockout year.
Now, one might rebut that the incoming players are younger and therefore prior years aren't as applicable. But that's not true. Beleskey is the same age as Lucic, Hayes is older than Smith, and Hamilton is the youngest of the lot.
If you look a little closer, what you see is that Beleskey and Hayes both had break-out (career?) years, while Lucic and Smith both had off years. To simply compare the numbers from that single year is beyond incompetent (or insulting).
And it completely ignores the fact that Hamilton was a 21 year old stud defenseman.
This just screams of Sweeney finding a number that looks okay and throwing it out there, with the implied assumption that the audience is dumber than a sack of hammers.

Well I guess we know how much Sweeney values goals..
Lets be a bit less shallow and look at total points.
Beleskey, Hayes = 67 points
Lucic, Smith, Hamilton = 126 points
Hmm, this moneypuck goals in vs goals out system may be a little flawed..

I don't think it means Sweeny's dumb - it means he thinks his fans are.

We already have other evidence that Sweeney is dumb. What this looks like is that he thinks the fans are even dumber than he is… which is pretty dumb in itself.

Every now and then I have to look again at the contract Hamilton signed. For some reason I keep worrying that we signed him for $7+mil and I get a little antsy. This will be one of the best value deals in all of hockey in a season or two from now.
Can't wait to watch Brodie and Hamilton for the next 4 or 5 years.

Oh, I agree, other evidence (Hamilton is exhibit A) establishes Sweeny's intelligence.
And thinking someone else is dumb is usually dumb, you are correct again.
