My wife loves her some ginger beef and she only ever really cares to order from Chilli Island on 130th Ave SE. Of course that could be a product of proximity more-so than quality. But there you go.

Why is it that Calgary ginger beef is something completely different than every where else? I do miss that stuff!

Silver Inn says they invented it:
http://www.silverinnrestaurant.com/s...estaurant.html
Initially they had to serve a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches to please customers who weren't ready for the new Chinese dishes. That's when Lily's husband, George Wong who was also the restaurant's chef, decided to take out an old beef recipe he had used while in England and tweaked it to satisfy the beef eating habits of Cow Town: he coated the beef strips in batter.
The new recipe was initially called "Deep fried shredded beef in chili sauce" and the word about its delicious taste and texture soon spread around town. Ginger beef was born.

Funny enough, Ginger Beef Bistro by the old Silver City theater in Country Hills has the best Ginger Beef I've had in Calgary.

We often go to Grand Pearl on 64 Ave NE -- it has mixed reviews though (my rule of thumb with Asian restaurants is to go for the food, not the service).
Ginger Beef Peking House is another option, although I haven't been there in years (various locations in Calgary).
Silver Dragon is a popular place with the downtown crowd (in Chinatown).
Also, I think a CP member's family owns Golden Inn Restaurant downtown. Open late night (i.e. post-game) -- however, I believe it is Cantonese style (not Peking style) so no ginger beef.

Tried it last year just for fun. It's still listed on the menu as "Deep fried shredded beef in chili sauce" -- and surprisingly it tastes exactly like its name. Worth trying once but I don't think I'll be back.

This is exactly why I came to the thread. I've tried a few recipes, but it's just not quite the same. I find it very hard to get the proper crunch. I tried with a batter the last time, and it came out more like a chicken ball. My kingdom for some advice.

This is the recipe I've used when making it at home. Does well at reproducing the Calgary Chinese takeout restaurant ginger beef.

Ginger beef was degraded once it became popular. When I first had it in the mid-80s, at places like the Yum Yum Tree, it was a very spicy dish (three red dragons). The pieces were also very long and thin, with only enough batter to hold the shredded meat together. The stuff you get today is way less spicy, and mushy instead of crisp. Unless there's still a hold-out somewhere making it the old-fashioned way.

Time to concoct a ginger beef-topped pizza I think.
