The Draisaitl comments are fishy to me because they are the opposite of the criticisms you think Burke would have.

The criticisms you think he would have are "Not quick enough", "Doesn't play big", "Not enough grit".

But calling him a bottom 6 guys is the opposite of what you expect from his skill set.

That is complete rubbish. You're taking a generic statement he said about some players ticking off the boxes for bottom 6 player, some players ticking off the boxes for top 6 players - it was never in reference to anyone.

Draisaitl's skill-set is top 6. It's not bottom 6. He's a high-end playmaking centre - something our organization lacks.

The consensus top 5 has been there on almost all scouting reports. You're speculating on stuff that is unknown to everyone, and by Burke's own voice, he grouped Draisaitl in the top group of forwards.

Apparently he said it at a lunch earlier this month:

My bad, hadn't seen that post.

His most recent interview on the Fan seems to offer a different view of Draisaitl (he's mentioned alongside Bennett and Reinhart). He says he likes the forward group, "size and skill there with the German kid" and then mentions Ritchie, and says "hard-nosed kid". Also makes note that Fleury is not in the top 5 or 6.

In scouting reports, I've not seen anything that leads me to believe Draisaitl is a projected bottom 6 forward - but Burke is Burke, so we'll see.

Why would Burke show his cards like this?

Seems unprofessional.

It will be interesting to watch and see if some prospects move up or down in the rankings according to their playoff or tournament performances.

Currently in the Under 18 tourney, Canada leads Sweden 2-0 with both goals scored by Virtanen.

Keep in mind Burke still has to meet with his scouts, and they'll let him know on who to pick. Something tells me the top 3 players they are discussing are Dal Colle, Bennett, and possibly Ritchie.

I have no source, just my assumption.

I think they will discuss Reinhart, Ekblad, and Draisaitl as well for that first pick.

They have to assess all potential scenarios, in addition to assessing if there is any benefit from moving up or moving down to get the guy the really like.

I think there are 4 players in the first ranking and we'll take the one left over, just like we did last year when there were 6 players.

With the Oilers probably a good bet to take Draisaitl at 3, I think the conversation should shift to Bennett vs Dal Colle.

Personally, I think we need someone with the skill set of both of these guys more than Draisaitl's right now. While Dal Colle would be my choice based on skill, Bennett has been said to have the fewest holes, and his grit and intangibles set him apart in terms of value, as well as him being a center.

And I'm gonna start calling these people who keep harping on Ritchie Sutterites soon if they don't start actually explaining why he'd be a better or fair pick at 4, instead of just acting all defensive over him.

Could one of the mods make a new thread and poll, asking who the Flames should select at #4 (assuming Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett go top 3)?

Draisaitl
Dal Colle
Ehlers
Fleury
Nylander
Ritchie
Virtanen
Other

That's a good way to put it. I totally forgot that that's how it went down last year. Probably going to go with the BPA.

It would be awesome if S. Reinhart somehow dropped in the top 3 like S. Jones did last year.

I must have missed something but why do people think Bennett will be available but Reinhardt will be gone?

I don't think Florida or Buffalo passes up on Reinhart, that's why.

Bennett could easily fall if Edmonton take Draisaitl. I maintain that we make a poll just taking out Ekblad and Reinhart. There seem to be enough Dal Colle and Ritchie (even Draisaitl) fans to make it interesting still.

Think the assumption is that the top 3 go:

Ekblad
Reinhart
Draisaitl

The poll should probably include everyone but Ekblad, he is the only one I don't see falling to us (although Nashville fans probably said the same thing about Jones last year).

There's not much contention on who we'd want the Flames to pick if either Reinhart/Ekblad/Bennett fell to 4th. The indecision on this forum seems to be if all three of those guys were taken.

What is that when both Sam's and Ekblad are all No 1's i.e. Reinhart isn't considered to be rated higher then Bennett?

I'd suggest holding off on the polls for now - the draft is still a couple of months off and the CHL playoffs and U-18 championships are still going. I know I'm going to spend some time the next couple months learning about some of these kids.

When it gets closer I'd like to see a series of elimination polls to get a consensus ranking (possibly starting with Ekblad and Reinhart excluded as they are extremely unlikely to fall this far).
