Flames Flames in contract extension talks with Backlund

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
#Flames GM Brad Treliving noted that the team has talked with Mikael Backlund's reps re: extension. Will circle back after free agency.

Great to hear. I hope Backlund is a Flame for life. He loves Calgary.

This is excellent news, the only problem being that Backlund was outstanding last season, I'm not looking forward to that contract.

I wouldn't mind a long term contract for Backlund. He might as well be a Flames his entire career.

The only thing I would worry about is his durability. He's been healthy for the past few years, but sometimes that durability fades as players get older.

I could see a 5 year 5.2 million deal
Or an 8 year 4.6 million deal (front loaded).

Can't see him making more than 5.5 million at any term, since his career high is 53 points.

Now that the flames have top 4 defender cost certainty going forward makes it much, much easier to talk turkey with Backlund.

Flames are going for it, expect a deal a shade under Monahan.

I'd be thrilled with a long term deal as long as the dollar value starts with a 5

Best news of the day, and I like the Hamonic trade.

5 yrs 5.5. Get it done, Brad!

Perfect number IMO. Less than offensive stars Gaudreau and Monahan and more than our UFA wingers.

Backlund retiring a Flame would make me very happy. He also plays a smart game that could carry him well into the later years.

I would really really like seeing something with good term given to the 28 year old.

6 X 6 would be the upper limit both in terms of term and $

I love Backlund, adding Hamonic gives some breathing room for this contract. Hopefully it's a long term deal.

Hopefully the Flames get the right price. Backs has always been dependable in his own end, but up until recently he hasn't shown a whole lot of offensive abilities. It wouldn't be good to pay him point-producing dollars that he can't live up to.

Um no. Love Backs but if that is the demand we need to deal him. 5x5 would be acceptable.

His 82 game pace over the last three years is 50 points. He's been .61 points per game in that period.

I'm not worried about it.
