Flames Problem: Too many Forwards. Solution: ?

Now that the expansion draft/first round have passed without any trades from the Flames, it is apparent to me that we have too many forwards for the upcoming season.

Gaudreau Monahan Ferland
Tkachuk Backlund Frolik
Bennett Brouwer
Bouma Stajan Chiasson

Plus the following bubble players/UFAs:
Versteeg Jankowski Lazar
Lomberg Hamilton Hathaway

Something has to give.
How does everyone see us solving this problem?

First I think you just dont re-sign Chiasson

FYI
I see Bouma and Hamilton heading to Stockton, and trading Chiasson. I think Versteeg hits the open market unfortunately (unless he is willing to sign up as a 4th liner/13th fwd)

I think we are stuck with Brouwer and missed an opportunity to unload him to Vegas with a sweetener.

Next year's lineup:
Gaudreau Monahan Ferland
Jankowski Backlund Frolik
Tkachuk Bennett Brouwer
Stajan Lazar Hathaway
Lomberg

Well first thing's first, the bolded 3 players are AHL level injury callups, so I don't even worry about fitting them on the NHL roster.

I'd be surprised if Versteeg is brought back, only if because Lazar will likely take that spot moving forward. Jankowski is the only guy that might force a veteran out, and my money is on Bouma, allowing Jankowski to enter the league on the LW and then transition to center after Stajan is done. In that scenario there is a spot open for a UFA, possibly being Versteeg, but maybe a much better player too.

This isn't really a problem as far as I'm concerned.

Let's wait til training camp I suppose. Most of those extra guys would easily pass through waivers

Yeah, I feel like every team in the NHL has this "problem" if you list all of their AHL prospects and UFAs.

I think you have to bring Versteeg back.

He wants to be here and said so himself. Tree needs to bring him back as he offers allot to this team.....much more than Brouwer.

Take advantage and sign him as cheap as possible but keep him around.

Ideally:

Bury Bouma
Trade/pressbox/spot play Stajan
Let Chiasson go to UFA
Sign Versteeg
Promote Hathaway, Jankowski
F. Hamilton same as last year

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Tkachuk - Bennett - Versteeg
Hathaway - Lazar - Brouwer
Stajan, Hamilton

I'd like to keep Chiasson and Versteeg over Bouma and Stajan. We also need to carry 13th and 14th forwards

Gaudreau-Bennett-Ferland
Tkachuk-Monohan-Versteeg
Lazar/Jankowski-Backlund-Frolik

Lazar/Jankowski/Hathaway/Chiasson/Stajan (whomever is earns it) send Hathaway, Bouma or Jankowski down to Stockton along with Freddy.

Disclaimer: Lines are just something I would like to see tried out at some point during the season and definitely not what I expect opening night.

My ideal forward group

Gaudreau-Monahan-Marleau (he plays all three positions)
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland-Bennett-Brouwer
Jankowski-Stajan-Lazar

My ideal situation:

Flames trade Bouma, Brouwer, and Stajan (for picks)
Flames acquire Kovalchuk, Foo

Gaudreau - Monahan - Kovalchuk
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Bennett - Lazar
Shinkaruk - Jankowski - Foo

I would love to see Tkachuk, Bennett and Lazar together and think they would pose a matchup problem for other teams
- You need to put your best D against Johnny's line (with Ferland)
- the new 3M with Janko is going to shut down your top line
- then the three kids are going run your third line out of the rink
- Bouma/Hathaway/Chiasson, Stajan, Brouwer on the 4th line I guess.

I don't see a spot for Versteeg though I'd love to see him back.

I would like to see them walk away from chiasson and versteeg and jettison bouma or have him as an expensive 13th forward. Then sign marcus foligno to play LW with Stajan and Brouwer on that 4th line and replace Engelland's knuckles.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland/Lazar
Janko-Backlund-Frolik
Tkachuk-Bennett-Ferland/Lazar
Foligno-Stajan-Brouwer

Bouma/Hamilton/Hathaway

I think Marleau is a Shark for life, but if he can be snagged on a 1 year deal (maybe even 2) for around $5 million, I'd be all over that.

We needed those sweetners to trade for Hamonic.

Vegas generally took bad contracts at a cost of a 1st round pick.

I don't think Brouwer is that bad, but Vegas wasn't taking on his contract obligations lightly.

Brouwer is not a concern anymore wage wise now that G and 3/4 D slots have been filled pretty inexpensively... even with Brouwer the Flames are going to walk into this season with decent caproom unless they go crazy sign two expensive UFAs.

And then after this season his NTC ends and I'm sure they'll be able to move him partially retained if they really need to.

Give him a chance to prove himself this year, it's a no lose situation given the likely cost to unload him.
