If true, Johnny will probably draw a million penalties early in the season until players actually fully adjust

This is good news.
They are oblivious to what the actual problem is though. As mentioned, the interpretation of slashing is fine. It's up to the refs to call it consistently. Or fine the heck out of players until they capitulate.

I really hope they go extreme like they did on restraining fouls. Stick should be to play the puck and not the player. And by extreme, I mean no chops to the backs of the legs in front, no stick on stick slashes, nothing.

I suspect they will move to something like 'glove and up', similar to what it was after the first lockout. The problem with glove and up is very similar to bobble head (looking at you Bonino!!) with high sticks, players will flap their hands in an attempt to draw a penalty.

Maybe they can make 'shaft and up' a thing. . .

They should take the refs out of it an institute the technology from fencing. If your stick touches an opponent's body a light turns on and you get a penalty.

One play that stood out to me as an obvious example of 'managing the game' was Gio's OT goal in LA a few years ago. At 0:30, there are blatant slashes on a player who has clearly already beaten his man. And of course the camera pans to the ref who has an excellent view of the play. But of course it's OT and slashes are OK as long as no sticks are hurt in the process.

I just don't understand why this adds to the game.

If serious, this could have a meaningful impact on Flames record. I'm not sure there's a player in the league more impacted by slashes. Some of that is how he handles it, but regardless this helps the Flames.

Haha - that video is pretty funny. There are four very clear attempts to slash the hands and then he just hooks on to Gio as he drives the net. I forgot about that goal; a nice trip down memory lane.
