Am I missing something? Guitar Pro keeps getting mentioned as a learning tool. Is it not just tab software?

It will play back BEeP BOOP midi versions of songs in time that you can play along to, and typically has very detailed and layered tabs for everything from all 5 guitar layers to the drumline and horns.

As I mentioned before, Songsterr.com does the same thing in Java (no download) but it's a bit less accurate and has a smaller database than whats out there for GuitarPro.

As a learning tool it's great, because you can adjust the BPM down to learn solos and such with less effort, and gradually speed it up.

guitarpro's strength is teaching timing and rhythm, one of the biggest weaknesses of the large majority of guitar players. If you are playing a song you have to keep time and when you make a mistake you have to keep playing the song in time which is where guitarpro excels over ultimate-guitar

It's basically a tab that plays along with you and is much more accurate than most text tabs you find online. You can also hear if a song is accurate in the first place.

Why it's a great learning tool is that it's basically Rocksmith except that it allows you to see the entire song and play any sections you want by a click of the mouse or to isolate tracks and instruments and change the timing, etc.

You could argue that you don't have the validation of playing along to Rocksmith where it tracks the notes you play as correct/incorrect but Guitar Pro does something better in that it teaches you to know if you played something wrong by ear in the first place so you don't need a videogame telling you that you played the wrong note.
