Default Jon "Frickin" Gillies (3rd rounder 2012)

While I think the "frickin" thing is overused, I also think that Jon deserves his own thread after being lights out in the first months of his NCAA career. I was sceptical when the Flames chose to take a goalie in the 3rd round (I didn't think they would after adding Brossoit in 2011 and acquiring Ramo via trade), but Gillies has been impressive throughout the season ... not only did he win a gold medal with Team USA in the WJC, he has also been spectacular in the NCAA:

9-6-2 (they are 0-2-1 without him), 1.95 GAA, .931% svs, 3 SO

Posting numbers like that is impressive, even when you're a senior ... but considering he's a freshman and the Friars aren't a top team in the NCAA, I have high hopes for this kid!

Flames list of other 3rd round goaltenders (as in, all of them):
Mike Vernon
Craig Anderson

I really hope Gillies continues that trend of success. He's a big guy, fairly athletic, and has decent lateral movement for a man his size and age. He is quiet and positional based. Glove hand is really unnoticeable though. I see a lot of JS Giguere in him.

PC Men's Hockey ‏@FriarsHockey
Gillies finished with a career high 48 saves in the game, the 7th-highest single game total in PC history.

From the highlights of that game, Gillies looks really strong down low with some good lateral movement

I loved what I saw in Gillies' couple of periods at World Juniors and his season at PC has been tremendous so far. It definitely looks like we got a good entry in the goalie lotto game.

That 48-save game should've been 6-1 at minimum based on the highlight vid I just saw. Gilles made four or five incredibly athletic stops that most goalies have no business making. Very excited to see him develop, he should be in line for the #1 job with the US next Christmas.

Is there any word on who his competition in net will be next year? Out of all the flames prospects (next to Gaudreau) this guy is seemingly turning into the one with the most potential.

Connor Hellebuyck of Umass-Lowell will be the top competition in my opinion.

Hellebuyck turns 20 in May. He'll not be WJC eligible.

I'd expect Anthony Stolarz to be competition for Gillies.

he crossed my mind but with him defecting from college I'm not so sure. They play politics pretty badly in the national development program.

Who knows maybe they will put a draft eligible guy on the team like Thatcher Demko

My guess is they continue with the one 19 yr old and one 18 yr old as the strategy. Let an 18 yr old be the backup and soak up the experience before being the starter the following year.

I would think that it's Gillies job unless he gives it away.

I was thinking more the 17 year old as the number 3 goaltender.

yeah that could be a factor. Still find it baffling that Stolarz left college to get more playing time, yet he joined a team that already had a very solid tandem. Seems to do well in the OHL, though.

I have no doubt that Gillies will be the starter though. There weren't any good US goalies drafted in 2012 outside of Gillies and Stolarz, and the 2013 crop doesn't look overly fantastic either. USHL goalie Eamon McAdam is ranked #7 among NA goalies in the CSS rankings. Winterhawks goalie Brendan Burke is #13, but that's about it. (for context purposes: Stolarz and Gillies were #4 and #6 in the final CSS rankings).

Bump for Gillies.

I'm staring at his statline on hockeyeastonline.com and its goooood.

1.69 GGA (2nd) and .945 %SV (1st) after 12 GP.

With Brossoit gone, the organization is showing total faith in this kid to keep up this insane level of development.

Honestly, I don't think there's really an argument to be made that he isn't the best prospect. He's 6-5, with a quick glove hand, blocker, and is getting quicker laterally (He's Luongo fast side to side now). There really is not a lot to shoot at because he's so big.

If he keeps progressing as he has been, he could develop into one of the top 5 or so goalies in the NHL. He is the best goalie prospect we've had since Trevor Kidd.
