I think it caps it actually. If this is what a first line centre on the WC champions, who consistently produces gets, then I don't think Draisaitl can ask for more.
7.5 million ends up being 20 for both up north.

Also rewatching that fight I posted above, noticed that Versteeg is just loving it!

Oh for sure. All the contracts that have been signed since last season make me happy we re-signed Gaudreau and Monahan when we did last summer. They look like steals now.
Not trying to turn this into a Draisatil thread but I believe he'll be playing hardball now (unless they have a deal already worked out prior to today). There has been speculation (TSN) about him being unhappy with how Edmonton handled him during his rookie season. He then went and out performed their golden boy in the playoffs. And of course, having to live in Edmonton, there has to be compensation for that right?
Anyway, back on topic. Yes that seems steep, but you could argue that with Johansen healthy the Preds could be Cup champions.
That's definitely a fair deal. I would take that in a heartbeat.
I swear some of you still think the cap is at like $50 mil. You guys are going to #### yourselves when you see contracts that guys like Eichel, Matthews, Nyladner etc. are going to get in the next couple years.

Good player for sure and his stats are better than I would have thought, but it still feels like an overpayment. Feels a bit Kessel-like to me (contract, not player)

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
This guy also has some health concerns: I think there was a heart thing earlier in his career and just last year he took a normal hit and almost had to have his leg amputated!

Another deal that makes the Mony signing last offseason look very reasonable!
Mony wasn't a UFA to be, so it's hard to compare those deals.
I don't think Nashville deciding to not pay him this much and letting him walk would increase their SC chances.
Nashville is in a good place and can afford this easily. They are set up to contend for the foreseeable future and he is an important part of the team.

My goodness people toss that term around way too much.
Johansen has the 9th most points out of any center in the league over the last 4 seasons, and he is the youngest guy in the top 20, and he put up those numbers from his 21 to 24 year old seasons.
This is a great contract that buys 7 years of UFA.
He's 20th among centres (with at least 50 gp) in PPG (0.78) over that time frame, with his last 2+ years in Columbus (0.79) being slightly better than his first 1+ years in Nashville (0.76).

50 games played is a terrible sample size if you're going to use points per game.
300+ games over the last 4 years (which proves durability) and he's 11th, and like I said the youngest in the top 20 by a large margin with the exception of Seguin.
And if you look at the cap hits / contracts of all the other guys in that group, Johansen's contract is just fine.

300 games excludes Malkin, Stamkos, Tavares, Matthews, Eichel, and Marner, who would be above him. Any list of top centres that excludes those players is terrible.

What good is a slightly better p/pg if the player in question plays a lot less games?
And all those names you listed either already have a higher cap hit than Johansen or will in the next year or two which enforces my stance that his contract isnt a gross over payment.
