The Starting Six series comes to you to dive into the best player at each position all-time for every organization. The biggest and best at each position, with the most memorable moments in franchise history. Here is the Calgary Flames all-time lineup.
MAYBE you could argue Gio and replace him with Suter or Housley, but Gio is also very deserving. His story still isn't finished.
Yeah, really only argument from me is Suter vs Gio. I think in long term it's Gio, but if I had to make the choice now, I'd go Suter. I think people forget how good he was here. Was definitely overshadowed by Chopper. I also think his legacy was hurt a little bit due to the fact he was injured for most of the '89 run.

Yeah, great choices, and as above the only argument is Suter vs Gio...I think I'd also take Sutes right now.
You should probably make a full squad with 3 lines.
Hmmm. well to be argumentative. If everything was on the line and I was icing the best players in each position and we had to score - I would put Fleury on the ice before Iginla. Just saying. They are both awesome - and as Bingo stated we have had riches at RW.
While it would be a great story, wasn't McDonald's goal the 2nd of the game? Gilmour scored the winner (and the insurance goal I believe).
Mcdonald's goal was the go ahead goal in a 1-1 game. Gilmour then made it 3-1 in the third before MTL got one back. Empty netter made the game final at 4-2.
But yes, Mcdonald's goal isn't the game winner, but is certainly the more iconic moment from that game/year.

I actually thought Macoun was more important to the good teams back then, than Suter was. Hard to put guys like Macoun or Regehr on a list like this, but they've both been very key players to our best seasons.

4/6 are clear cut, the two up for debate are the LW and LD.
Do you stick so rigidly to players that played exclusively on that side, or look for the next best forward who played some time on LW? (even if their main position was C or RW)
Agree with other posters, longevity will get Giordano that spot in the end, especially if he keeps playing well and the team has more playoff success, but in terms of impact/talent Suter would be ahead IMO. Beyond that, you get into the eternal argument with D of how much to measure points/consider defence first D (Regehr, Macoun, etc.)
But i like that it is an all time list that does not try to be controversial/contrarian
these are always interesting topics with the two groups of fans on the site. I think the older guys (me) tend to give too much credit to the past, while the younger group goes with what they've seen more than the older players.
